If you had to choose one as a daily driver and an offroad vehicle, which would it be? I’m looking at the BaT
BJ-40 And didn’t know if there were any downsides. Sorry if I’m flooding this sub.

This specifically

Definitely boils down to personal preference. Having had both there is just something about the diesel I enjoyed. Although the reliability of the gas was incredible.

I thought @whitey45 was having issues getting a diesel registered in CA.
thread lightly
B diesel probably pass
from central America definite pass

Oh sorry didn’t see you were from Cali. Have you thought of a bicycle?

seriously I’ve owned 2 cruisers with the 3b and just bought another. They’re reliable and just keep going!

Very hard to register any grey market vehicle, california is not the place to live if you want neat rigs! You can on occasion get the dmv clerk that is oblivious and use the Jedi mind trick to push a diesel through the system, but it’s rare. On the Bj bs Fj, I have a turbo 3b and it’s a great little engine, also have a 2h and it is not a power house but is super smooth at cruising speed. The biggest advantage imo is the diesel starts, runs and idles every time. No points, no carb, no spark plugs, just super reliable idle all day upside down!! I have had the big v8’s too and they are fun to drive. A properly tuned f engine is a pure joy too, love the 500rpm idle. I guess to answer the question, just have one of each😬

Have you driven an example of either one? My 2F FJ40 has been unbelievably dependable for almost 43 years and never any engine work.

I have never driven a diesel either so I can't comment on that aspect. I do know my land cruiser follows this saying " "Do you want to have fun, go for a long drive into the wilderness? -- Get yourself a Range Rover. Do you want to have fun, go for a long drive in the wilderness and GET BACK? Get yourself a Land Cruiser".
