:crybaby:Well, it looks like its my turn. :censor: I've read about it happening to others but never to our rig. I've always made sure i keep an eye on it and today i noticed that the EGR pipe is starting to melt my wire harness. Dont think anything has happened to the actual wires inside yet.. but soon it will. Needless to say the harness is getting torn apart and replaced or wrapped before i drive it much longer. Sucks, cause it looks like a real PITA to get too. May just drop it off at ToyotaMasters and have them get mad at me instead lol

Let the fun begin :flipoff2:

Thank god i check my rig out once a week and mine didn't look like this.. https://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/169319-melted-engine-wire-harness.html

If none of the wires are damaged, you can probably just add another layer of heat shield. I used to use some stuff that was awesome for that. It was orange and really bumpy and ugly looking but it worked great. I think they use it on race cars/trucks. Unfortunately I have no idea where it comes from, I can check on Monday.

Socal,
Where is that located? Is that the PHH behind it?

x2

Any advice on the best angles to get my eyes on the harness? I've been needing to do the EGR/harness spot check, but have been putting it off. Thanks

Disconnect the harness from the firewall where it sits above the heater valve, and then see if you can pull a bit of it up to get at the old heat wrap and put new heat wrap on the area.

Besides pulling the valve cover, throttle body, and some other extraneous crap back there, there really isn't any easy way to get to the wires back there.

ANother reason to re-route your wire harness if you get a chance. I pulled mine out of where it resides between the lower intake runners (4 and 5) and will be routing it under neath the intake.

Good luck.

Oh great. Now I have to go get my flashlight and check on mine before I can go to sleep tonight. Thanks Dave! :flipoff2:

Seriously, good reminder. ;)

Yeah thats the PHH behind it in the picture. Thanks for the recommendation on the wrap LX. I just ordered a roll of it.

Another thing i noticed while inspecting the rig is that someone left the data cover off of my OBDI port. Im so pissed. Whoever (and im pretty sure i know who) did it, needs a swift kick in the *($#_$ because now its filled up with dirt!!!

Aww c'mon get 'er done :flipoff2:

Heat shield thermal insulation

Part# 340110, High temperature foil tape -Withstands 1000F radiant, 450F direct, protect wires, lines, cables, reflects and dissapates heat, self adhesive backed.

Yeah, the worst part is I have a roll of it in my garage and I still haven't done it. :o ;p

Ok, so is the highlighted bundle the harness? And the location I need to be worried about is right between the two highlighted portions?

Just checking...

Another good reason to get a ScanGauge or at least a good excuse.

No scangauge here dude. I called and they dont make one for OBDII. Trust me, i was ready to buy one a while back :)

Dave-

Correct me if I'm wrong but the Scangauge is OBDII compliant, it's your rig which is not. Bummer. Sorry for the hijack.

Since 1996, all cars and light trucks sold in the US have been required by law to have an On-Board-Diagnostic version 2 (OBD2 or OBD II) connector inside the passenger compartment. It is required to provide diagnostic information and allow resetting of the CHECK ENGINE light. It also provides a lot of other operating information. The ScanGauge II performs the diagnostics functions like a conventional scan tool.

Yeah Whoops, Typo i meant OBDI dude. Yeah no scangauge for OBDI. We are OBDI , 1993. Suck to be us. Only plus is that i can do the paperclip trick and grab the codes off my dash.

yup, and really impressive to see you do this at 60mph on the freeway! :D taken any movies yet you can show us? :D:D

Well, Dave would have to be going down hill and without the trailer to hit 60mph. :steer:

true, his frontal cross-section is that a fuel tanker...

wait a minute! it *is* a fuel tanker....

:D

Ok, so I got in and was diagnosing my code 71 today and had a chance to check the wiring harness. Let me know if I've got the right area highlighted? If thats the area then I'm good....at least as far as external damage. I wish I had the speed tape so I could've wrapped it up while I was in there.
