Just about finished the Birfields on my 70, what a good time ;) I bought a kit, but it does not include the inner-most steel flange that bolts the felt against the Birfield to keep the grease in. The part most exposed to weather, salt...This part on mine had rusted away-nothing left. I'm sure my local Coyote dealer willl have it, along with 5 to 10 other pieces in a kit for a real good deal. Can you get these 2 half moon plates on the after market?
Also I have a hair-line crack on the inner cage of the Birfield joint. Who has the best deal on these Birfields?
Doug

Somebody said that the inner cage from coarse spline birfs fit the fine spline birf. Coarse spline birfs are dime a dozen (unless it's during Rubithon, then they cost $50 ;) )

Never tried swapping coarse spline birf guts myself. I hate cleaning up the grease.

Doug,

Call Tracy in Hilltop Toyota in Salmon Arm, B.C at 888 290-3388 and she will help you, plus give a 25% TLCA discount. Just ordered all 4 OEM shocks from her. I think she works Saturdays.

good to know Napa sells them....it was my impression that they were Toyota only...other than the beefed up aftermarkets.

Doug, what time you finish up last night???

Late, 8 hours for one side - the most fun one could have cleaning, degreasing, sanding, wirewheeling, painting...Can't wait to start the next side. Looks like I have to start my day making the inner flange. I was searching this forum last night on Birfields, it seems to be a consensus to buy OEM. I just put mine back in, need to drive.

I just got done pulling the lockright from the front of my 40. PITA and fought me the whole time. I don't know why I put it in there to begin with. I ended up ruining the drivers birf because I was smacking it to get it in. Stupid i know my dad was yelling at me not to and stop but after an hour of wiggling i was pissed, forgot to eat lunch so I was getting irrated easily(got to remember to eat). It's a tight fit with mini birfs in the old housing.. and I only hit it with the grinder enough for a tight fit in. At least I can go home and put the lock right in the bj :). After calming down I wiggled it some more and it popped right in, Uh... anyway I need to pull the birf again to replace it, I took the inner aisin hub apart to put everything back together so I could drive it. At least I can have some traction in the rear of the 70 which is the only cruiser that i use now :(

next time try turning the driveshaft SLOWLY as you push in... the teeth were not aligned properly...

Yeah.. I was doin that wayne :) I was turning the pinion flange and I had my dad turning the birf on the other end while wiggling. no go. I haven't been irritated like that in a while. I think the shaft was a tad low of the splines and with the tight fit of a mini birf in a grinded down 76 housing I had little room to move it around. When it did pop in it suprised the hell out of me. At least the good part is i'll have traction in moab with the bj and birf was on it's last leg anyway. Last time I did work on it it broke the snap ring on the body of the aisin hub, so I'll be glad to toss that one. so long you pesty birf :flipoff2:

I guess that's what I deserve for running junk yard pullled mini birfs

AUH, nice to see someone else having fun on the weekend. Wes, what kind of joints are you going to buy?

Yeah.. I feel like that's all i've been doing is knuckle rebuilds. I did the bj before I left and swapped in 4.11's. Since i have a few months before I'll get back to va. I'll have time to think about what i'll do. I was thinking of just buying a napa birf.. but I might buy longs to put in the bj and then use the other, and have one spare. I have a spare now so i might just use that but i'd need to replace so i have a trail spare.

Sounds like you had fun too ;)

Can anyone give the Napa part number for the Birfield joints, my local Canadian dealer does not list one. He says if I gets the number he may be able to cross-reference it

Toyota part number is - Shaft, Drive = 43405-60015, which subs up to 60016.

Perhaps ask them to look for an "outer axle" for a solid axle minitruck?

Quick call to Napa gets part number 8621, and they quoted $146.00 (no account number give for them to quote) Cdn. Better then the $475.00 to $520.00 cdn price I have been quoted at Toyota dealers...
