about as far as we could get it without cutting out the t case hump. Last time I was really scared to do this for some reason.. This time almost instantly required :)

This time, to get right placement with the 80 front axle etc, and in reference to the body, the engine will have to be pretty tall in the frame... But I should have quite a bit of vertical clearance without danger of hitting the front axle. With the 60 series axle last time, I wasn't too worried about it but with the 40/55 axle last time, it was a pretty close.. Another Mudder / cruiserhead, has a 55 with a 4BT and tore up his oil pan by hitting the driveshaft, which was too close for comfort for me also last time...


Anyway, I had to cut this little section of the firewall out too.. I am considering replacing the whole firewall with new steel as well, hotrodder style :D

more or less final placement of the trans.... I am going to fab up a whole new t case hump / dog house, so those will be some of the fun upcoming updates in the near future as I have time to work on it :D You can also see the trans is slightly rotated (a couple of degrees) clockwise which I may or may not keep...

Here are all the clearancing issues I had to/will have to deal with....

First and the biggest issue is the starter... It is huge, and hits the frame.. this is because I chose to use the Dodge setup (again with the NV5600, mandatory).. I used a Chevy bellhousing/setup last time, narrower, starter goes vertically.. Really not sure why they did this retarded setup with the Dodge.. As you can see in pic, it is about .5" from the frame here. Which means if there is not a smaller/alternate Dodge setup, I am going to have to clearance the frame a little to have it fit. No worries though I can do this strong and safely.. Just more work and I am worried an inspector or something like that might not think its as "safe" as the factory frame boxing.. But I will make it beefy...

2nd is the front axle... It needs to go up and down. Luckily means engine only has to be mounted 1.5" inches to the right, which is not bad.. Contributes slightly to "cruiser lean" though... Also, once lifted I should get anywhere from 3-4" inches of height so that will add to clearance. But even at full compression should be nice and tight but fit well...

AC and other accessories will be over here, so I need to have some room on this site. About 7" total, about 5 on the driver side, which is actually about perfect...

Next is how the turbo sits and specifically its exhaust output. Even with the trimmed 6BT manifold, that moves the turbo up and forward, I still have to worry about exhaust hitting the firewall. I have about 5.5", which is plenty of room I think for a 3" exhaust.. But close nevertheless... It is a lot like the turbo setup we put on Damon's BJ42 which also has an exhaust that is very close to the firewall, and also very similar to my last setup with the chevy manifold that puts the turbo low and back instead of center and high like this one. Might have to use some heat tape around the exhaust, near the manifold...

Next is the 2nd battery, which will need to be in the back corner where the heater blower motor was, becasue of the turbo placement.. I want to do a battery on each side similar to how I did it last time. Pic of the completed engine compartment is my last piggie using dual bats also...

Here you can see the turbo elbow is close for comfort, going to have to figure this out. Using gel batteries, get a little more clearance which I plan to do again I think...

and here is pretty much absolute final resting positon. The engine nice and level pretty much sideways and front to back (which is not necessary). Problem is the starter is hitting the frame resting there.. So.. I am going ot have to clearance some more.. Or figure something else out with a different starter if I am lucky...

but when level and in this position, with the starter hitting the frame, it yields the best overall position. Here is the last clearance issue, the big wide Dodge bolt pattern/bellhousing hitting the trans hump build for the smaller Toyota stuff... Here is as good as it gets...

And here is final resting place of the motor and how it will look in the engine compartment. I also put the front clip back on to check clearancing there. Fits fine, no issues what so ever, in fact it almost compliments the engine placement & accessories and everything fits great.. Only other issue is that air intake on the right might hit my long ass brake master cyl and hydrobooster so I might have to use a different air intake tube...

And here is the as far as I got last night.. I was worried when I had the engine farther back that I would have to do a little more chopping at the firewall because of the bellhousing. So I started looking all over for the FJ55 gas pedal and couldn't find it.. Honestly don't even remember if it came with one? Anyway, with about 10 minutes of work I bent the 80 series pedal to fit perfectly on the 55, so that is what I'll use... Very easy, using the vice... I even rebent the spring that keeps it up to give it more life out of 170K miles of life in the 80 series...

Which brake and clutch pedals are you going to use? 55 or 80 series?
 
I lengthened an alternator bracket tonite and came back inside feeling all proud and cocky. then I see what you have done...
you and your work are in a whole different league.

Pulled the motor last night getting ready to start fabbing up the motor mounts... Here is my special place that I leave it hanging out of the way.. I LOVE the steel beam roller style, makes it really easy to install the motor...

I decided to work on the spot where I am going to have to trim out around the starter first.. I lifted the frame off the weight of the truck to minimize possible distortion.. Lifted like this it is the weight of the frame itself which isn't too bad...
