Gents I am looking to replace the shocks on my stock height 2004. I have run bilstein HDs for years on multiple Tundras and really like the ride and longevity. I have read the posts on the forum and can't really make sense of what folks are saying. Some complain of breaking the rears.

Is the breakage on lifted trucks? Will they or won't they work on a stock height LC?

i have bilsteins on all four wheels, 2000 lc - no problems. I don't rock crawl for the record.

I was one of the cases of the fractured rear bilsteins. It happened twice and as far as know there was a change of design of the shaft itself (top mount) the third set I got had beefier shaft and it has been fault free for the past 2 years or so and even survived the 100's in the hills no problem. As long as you get the improved batch you should have no issues and they are recommended.

Any idea how to ensure that you get the new improved shocks vice the old? Is their a part number etc to look for?

not sure of the part number but a friend of mine ordered them 6 months ago from tirerack.com and they were upgraded.
I think by now unless you buy from someone who has old stock you should be ok.
