I would like to upgrade my old, worn out shock absorbers with some new Bilsteins. I have a 1974 FJ 40 with stock suspension, and a soft top. I would like opinions between the 4600 series and 5100 series shocks. How stiff are the 5100s and/or how much softer would the 4600s be?
The FJ40 is light in back because of the soft top and I'm afraid the 5100s might make for a too-stiff ride.

Any thoughts or insight is appreciated.

Thanks,

Ray

I installed 5125s and they were a huge improvement over the crappy Ranchos I found in the truck when I bought it - everybody who has them likes the Bilsteins

I have 51-series shocks on my 40. They ride very well, plus looks much better.

X2. Smooth ride!

I appreciate the replies. However, my FJ40 is NOT lifted and I see that the replies from people favoring the 5100 (or 5125) series have lifted trucks.

Is anyone running these on a non-lifted, stock FJ40?

Thanks again,

Ray

I am dying to hear the answer to this too. I'm pretty sure my 40 has 20 year old dented ranchos (can't be safe) right now. Planning to stay stock ride height as well, but have not been able to find a straight answer. Subscribed!

No, 5100 are for lifted trucks. I was going to run them but they didnt have a size to fit the back. I was going to put MAF 2 1/2 towers but since I couldnt match the back I blew it off. I bet you wouldnt be able to tell the difference unless you were drinking and had a bet with a friend.

Says on the Bilstein product book online, 5100s fit stock to 2 inches of lift. Mine is completely stock and I just ordered a set of 5100s, so ill let you know how it goes

Installed them on my completely stock 75, and they ride like a dream. Very pleased.

bparker - if you havent thrown the boxes out yet, would you mind posting part numbers?

yeah- when I look at the catalog it lists a B6 number for the j4.
