Hey there I need to know what the biggest tires I can get on the Cruiser without lifting or doing a gear change. I have an 89 with an automatic tranny. What do you guys think?

i personally wouldnt go above 31s with no lift and no regear.

you can fit 33s but you wouldnt have any room for articulation.

some people may disagree with me, hope i helped :)

Measure those tires!

Check the actual specs = my 2 sets of 30X950R15s are visibly different when eyeballed. Michelin XCX/APT noticeably taller than Pro Comp ATs. The Michelins are also much stiffer sidewall & give better road performance.

That's the only size I've ever run in 18 years, so I can't comment on biggest. Remember, the FJ62 came w/225-75-R15s, so a 30 is a 2-size upgrade. I would imagine much taller & you'll be shifting from D to 3 on inclines more often.

I ran 2 years on 33x9.5r15 BFG a/t's on 18 year old clapped out springs, never a rub, never a gearing problem. Never an MPG over 15 :D. They fit, it's well documented, welcome and use the search. :flipoff2:

In terms of gearing my belief is that it really depends on the amount of hills that you drive. If you're primarily on the flats going to a 33 might not be a big deal. For me even 31s made an impact for the type of driving that I do (foothills and mountain passes in WA trying to maintain highway speeds).

You can do a shackle lift and run the 33's (or 32's to be safe).
You have the 4.11 gears in you diffs ,as its an FJ62, so I believe that your only issue is gonna be rub. Shackle lift will help with that, and its relatively easy to do. The hardest part would be to get the old shackles out.

88 FJ62 33x10.5 BFG AT's saggy ass springs no worries with rubbing, bit of a dog up hills. But going in you know it's a wagon so you shouldn't be in a hurry to get there anyway  and welcome to the board.

Not Flaming Anyone, But

A newby FJ62 owner may have phrased the Q incorrectly, or think that fitment is the only issue.

For a 60-guy those are VERY accurate statements, however:

The impact of tire size/gearing/FJ62 interrelationships is not particularly enlightening when perusing the FAQ:

Wheels and Tires for a 60 / 62

Aftermarket wheels that work & part numbers

Rims and tires

Tires the iH8MUD members are running... a couple of examples

So I searched the terms of: 60 62 gearing tire and got 4 pages of threads to check. After checking the first 2 pages for 62 I really only found One post very pertinent to the search criteria. AND if you read that post you'll see that searching had been done before OP asked that time around. Opening Post:

Another 62 gearing question
I have just spent a lot of time reading through searches, but MOST of what I found was for guys running 60's with manual trannys. I'm specifically looking for info on gearing the FJ62 with gas motor and auto tranny with a 33" BFG AT. It seems like a 4.56 would be the obvious choice but want verification from those running my combo before I plunk down the ducketts for gears and required labor. I will then be selling the 4.10's

SO: FJ62/Autotrans/33" BFG's = 4.56 or 4.88?

What a 62 owner finds is that most FJ60 owners sure wish Mr. T had put 4.10s in their rigs, but 4.56 & 4.88 are way better with X dia tire. An OZ spokesman makes the case for X dia tire w/3F carby, the Canucks rub it in with what either of their diesels will do w/X dia tire in an HJ, etc.

I would say the Q: Biggest tires without lift and automatic? was precisely answered from a fitment view in the FAQ; but one must search very accurately to really find anything regarding the interrelationship.

It's been nearly 30 years since I drove my FJ55 from Wichita, KS, to the Ozark Underground Laboratory. A woman riding in the back seat got out & said I didn't know your jeep wasn't an automatic! My shifty skills were honed on a 1275 cc MG Midget. I got to repolish them on my 88.5 Tin Top. But I still can't teach my wife that lugging a 62 HP engine doesn't get one anywhere at 32 MPH in 4th gear.

I've been trying now for 3 years to teach my BIL, a 57 Chevy restorer by hobby; son of filling station owner; & my wife's brother; to drive the Samurai I sold him. Big motor guys' urge is to let HP/torque pull them out of everything.

Must admit, I've only driven ONE FJ60, ever. So I won't hold a candle to the prowess or knowledge base of an FJ60 owner. And I suppose if I searched long enough, I would find that someone has put an A440 behind a 2F FJ60 w/stock axles w/34 BFGs & made it up the hill on I70 toward the Eisenhower Tunnel to talk about it.

TLCA Party Games SUGGESTION:  Bicycle Test Drive - with gear replacement sets to mimic 3.73, 4.10, 4.56 & 4.88; & tires to mimic 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 35, 36 ad nauseum. I'm pretty sure my BIL could barely get one out of his driveway and likely wouldn't make it 20 feet down his gravel road. Now my other BIL is on Bike Across OK this week, so HE likely would understand tires/gearing/FJ62s attempting a grade with the wrong size tire for their ratios & hunting for a gear to use into the wind while the RPMs drop.

Hmmm, I'm wondering if he'll try to sneak the heat exhaustion treatment bill past my Sis again this year?

:eek: My flamesuit expired just as I turned my Pirate auto-subscription off. :hillbilly:

Ive got to agree with him. The search function around here is crap. everyone puts their vehicle specs in their signature, so if im looking for info on lockers every post everyone with a locked axle has made shows up in the search results!

lol..and the language filter is turned all the way up. fyi...i didnt even use a bad word there!

33X9.50 fits fine on a 62, and won't rub. Optimal gearing would be 4.56 or 4.88, but stock gearing is OK.

i think with an auto maybe the 488s would be perfect, with the 4speed, i would put in 4.56

im good though, im never changing from my 31s coz im in florida and theres not much to wheel, all i do is drive it to the beach and get the old guys telling me they had an LC back in the civil war... :)

THANX, I've had a desk in 2 Civil War (caps in my book) era stables: Ft. Leavenworth = brick, Ft. Riley = limestone. Finding graffiti on the attic timbers is always interesting.

Those 2 FTs are a lot like FJs = somebody new comes along & finds a way to mod to suit a purpose they were never intended for, and sometimes succeeds on the first try.

On the other foot, the HMMWV was in prototype stages in 1981 when I worked for Tank Automotive Command aka TACOM buying 6WD Fluorescent Orange Garbage Trucks for the DEW line. TACOM was also testing air filters (K&N, maybe?) & engine life in the the Mt. St. Helens fallout.

I think most anyone would have to believe using the HMMWVs in Iraq was death-defying. My respect to the men & women who modded them for conditions they were never designed for; I also respect the ingenuity & determination of Mudders doing the same with FJs.
