Hi All,

My 80 has 285/75/16 BFG AT tires, and they are now worn out so wish to replace with the same, however the dealer has the same size BFG AT's but without the white color lettering.

I kind of like the white lettering, anyone know why some BFG dont have the lettering, any other difference?

I always turn the white lettering in as I think it looks kind of "mall crawler" but to each his own. Of course that doesn't answer your question. To answer your question, I think BFG makes an E load rating tire in the AT which has more plies, less tread depth, and no white letters. That might be the reason.

WDE is correct. Ten ply or load range E=black sidewall, 8 ply or load range D=white letter.

thank you .. it is a shame the most 80 owners treat there rig like a mall crawler...white lettering will get rubbed off in the mud and rocks if you use it as a 4X4. take that thing off road and have fun with it.

Stick with the black side walls. Once you go black......

It seems the load range E tires are also not severe weather rated, indicated by the lack of the 'mountain snowflake'. I more interested in the severe weather rating and deeper tread than the white lettering, but can't find the load range D locally...

Edit- According to tirerack, it's not the load range that dictates the severe weather rating. It looks like the black walled AT KO's are not severe weather rated and the ones with the raised white lettering are and have the mountain snowflake.

^ The E rates KO's have less siping, which may be the reason for no severe weather label.

Yeah, load range does seem to be a factor. However in the 265/75/16 size BOTH are a load range E, but only the one with the raised white lettering is severe weather rated. In the 285/75/16 size, load range D also has the raised white lettering and is severe weather rated, but the load range E in that size is a black wall and not severe weather rated.

From tirereack, the 305/70/16 load range E has a snowflake, whereas the load range D does NOT have a snowflake- is this a typo on the tirerack site? Seems to be the opposite of the other sizes.

The snowflake on BFG AT's is utter bullcarp. Any of the modern AT tires is better in the snow than the 2 decade old BFG AT, snowflake or no. I laugh when I see new FJ cruisers with aftermarket BFG"s on. That's like putting 60 series tires from the seventies on your new Corvette.

Hi all,

Anyone know the weight difference between a BFG all terrain 285/75/16 and 315/75/16?
