I lost another tire over the weekend on a graded dirt road in Utah's west desert. A rock tore through the center of the tread. This is the second failure of this type I have had with the KOs. I otherwise like them, but this is pissing me off. I am considering going to a 16" wheel in order to use the 315/75R16 Goodyear Duratrac which, I believe, is a 10 ply rated tread vs. 6 (???) on my current 35x12.5R15 KOs. Tire gurus please chime in before I spend a fortune on tires and wheels.

Sucks to hear about that. Got any pics? I'd be interested to see it.

I too am thinking about 16" wheels. I'm not satisfied with my BFG AT's. The schizophrenic tread wear and tiny cracks are annoying. Plus I am 90% street use. There is probably a better tire out there for me.

All of the guys down here in AZ are in love with the Nitto Terra Grapplers and they seem to hold up really well to our desert and rocks.

It seems like you do more driving in your 60 than me but I love my KM2s. They only see about 2500 miles a year now but they sure are nice to look at every time I walk out to my garage. Haven't had any trouble in the sharp stuff either, but I am by no means a hardcore offroader. I am still addicted to 2 wheels for my off road fix.

I have 30k mi on a set of BFG KM2's from 2004. They have been to the Rubicon, Snake Lake, Eagle Lakes, and countless dirt rock roads of the Sierra Nevada's. I have pulled three nails out of one tire once. I have never had a flat or even a patch. I was starting to think they are indestructable. Maybe you have just had some bad luck as any tire can be sliced by the right rock. I too would be frusterated if i had your experience with them, but I swear by BFG's after the abuse mine have seen. At 8 years old mine do not even have a single crack that I can find.

I've been on BFG's since '98, mostly A/T's but one set of M/T's as well. Due to availability I went to the GY DuraTracs in the 315 R16 size for my new to me CTD. No idea what they are rated, they actually have 7 plies in the tread and 3 plies in the sidewall, and are Load Range E tires (all according to the tire's sidewall). They're noisier than my A/T's, but not by a lot. I only have about 2k miles on them, so they're still new. So far I'm impressed. Two took a pretty good hit in Cottonwood Wash Rd (yes, I know the county closed it, bah!) and don't seem to be any worse for it. Traction so far has been impressive. I just wish that they came in a tall, skinny size like a 255 85 R16

Good luck finding any 35-12.5 for a 15" wheel All Terrain from BFG or the AT2 from General Tire. They are on NATIONAL BACK ORDER from both manufacturers, with no expected production start up date. This is according to Discount Tire. The BFG Rep didn't know when or if they would start manufacturing that size.

when you go from a 15 to a 16 they are often rated as a heavier rated tire with more ply's/belts to match.

I agree with tapage regarding the toyo's. A harder rubber tire would suit your truck I think.

Also, the firestone destination MT's, and hankook MTRT03's should work. If your really into good wear on gravel roads, have a look at the michelin XML/ZML's although they only come in larger sizing than what your running.
