As a Tennessean myself, I would avoid KO2’s. I hated them on my 200. They slipped and floated much to often in heavy rain. My Ridge Grapplers are much more sure footed. I would also consider the new Nitto Recons as it’s slightly less aggressive tire and could be a popular new tire for the 200’s.
I don’t hate KO2s but they aren’t as rain friendly as other options I’ve experienced. Where KO2 really shinned for me was on lose dry ground and powdery or hard pack snow. Wet snow or wet rocks, they are not great, they slip like a mofo even when aired down. I’ve done an immense amount of off-roading when I lived in Lake Tahoe and Colorado. Having had several varsities of the better end A/T brands and models, my least favorite are Nitto Terra Grapplers and KO2. I was waiting in line to get gas at Costco the other day and a guy in his Tundra started chatting with me on how much he liked my 200 and the tires. He said he hated his Ko2 because they don’t inspire confidence on grip and are noisy now that he’s had 25k miles on them. Obviously it’s anecdotal but not the first time I’ve heard that. It’s why I ditched mine after 15k miles and bought Ridge grapplers and have been pretty had happy with them. They actually seemed to have quieted down in the last 1k miles. An example of my previous Ko2 slipping in rain was a sharp downhill turnoff towards my home I had to be extra careful with anytime it rained and my Ridge grapplers don’t produce that slip or nervousness now, they just stick to the road. I think KO2 are still one of the best looking A/T and if I lived in Arizona, I’d probably own them as they did me very well in sandy conditions. Just my .02I like this news. Cue the KO2 haters.
I think it’s funny and a little confusing how they call the Ridge Grappler a hybrid but it does make sense when you start using it. If you look at the Nitto website, it’s placed just above the new Recon and under the trail grappler. If you’re in a more true all-terrain environment, I believe based on my own experience that the Ridge Grappler is very much a true all terrain tire. Here in Tennessee, you could be on bone dry dirt “clay” and then in muck 20yrds later “rinse and repeat” because of the heavy tree shading never allowing an area to dry out. This is really where the Ridge grappler shines. The G2 Terra Grappler is quite possibly the worst tire I've ever owned, absolutely horrible in every way. The KO2's work well for me and where I live, obviously snow and ice aren't really common place here in south Texas so that weakness isn't exposed. We all need different attributes in a tire based off of our regional differences but there's no doubt it's still one of the best all around tires regardless of your location. I too love the Ridge Grappler, one of my favorites but I see it more as a Hybrid than a true AT like the KO2.
I like this news. Cue the KO2 haters.
For every hater there is someone who is just annoying who shouts "KO2s are the best tire ever made, PERIOD." Enthusiast love trying to prove each other wrong about a tire they have already bought.
I think it's great more vendors are making this size. 295/70/18 a great "true" 34" option for OEM 18" wheels and huge bonus that it fits in spare tire well. Best big tire with fewer compromises of running a full-fat 35.
