I'm a new convert to the glorious world of Landcruisers, and while I realize they aren't the economy car my Subie WRX was, I would appreciate some advice on how to squeeze a couple of more MPG out of the beast. I've been searching the net, but am pretty skeptical of the plethora of "Cyclone" style intake inserts, and would like to hear what has actually worked. I have to confess that I don't really have access to a shop to do any serious mechanical work, as I am in the Navy and moving constantly. Any help you can give would ge greatly appreciated.

Don't think there is much to do other than a tune-up (plugs, wires, air filter, synthetic fluids) But just cause you're in the Navy is no excuse not to work on your rig, MWR usually has great shops where you can use a lift and all kinds of tools, you can rent a stall for a long project, sometimes they have a paint booth, sometimes I wish I was still in then I could have access to some tools I don't have :D . My avatar should give you a clue to my prior service 8) . Be safe and we thank you for your service.

I can't think of much you can do to get better mpg. I get 13-4 in town and 17ish+- on the highway..........which make the 100 the highest mpg of any of my Cruisers ;)

use the cruise control a lot and install a supercharger. (you won't have to press the accelarator to get the truck moving) :D

Use the highest tire pressure that still gives you a comfortable ride. What tires do you have?

Only sure fire way to increase mpg in these beasts is to NOT drive them. Everything else is a fairy tale. Welcome Newbie :flipoff2: and my hat's off to you for your service to this country!!

This will be a "Do as I say, not as I do" post :flipoff2:

Reduce the load in the vehicle. Do not pack anything that is not absolutely required and remove the luggage rack, runningboards, hitch, ETC.

In other words toss everything overboard to lighten the vehicle and reduce the drag.

Of course this comes from someone who is packing an extra 1400 lbs around all the time

I popped my Garvin rack off a couple weeks ago to refinish it and went on a short roadtrip without it. I got a 1 mpg bump without it.

yup, also getting 14 in town and 17 on fwy with the 100.

What I'm doing to improve the mileage is to commute with the Accord and keep the 80 for the weekends... :D I also anticipate it will take an extra 10 years before I have to :birf: this way!

First off, hats off to you sir for your service! USA all the way!... Anyways i'd suggest not 'flooring' it and depending on how long ur going to have the truck i'd suggest a supercharger for the long run if ur desperate.... kind of tempting to have a supercharger and not 'floor' it or at least for me. get familiar with the cruise control...

How much better gas mileage does the supercharger give? I would be interested, but it would have to be alot to justify the $4000 price - though I suppose the extra pep would be cool too. . .

14 mpg city? I really gotta ease off the gas pedal ::)

oh, FWIW, the Nav Sys on the '03 appears optimistic on the gas mileage by about 0.5 mpg.
Not sure why, besides marketing reasons... :D

I used the Tornado in my Dodge Intrepid (god rest it's soul) with a 3.5 V6 and it gave me 3.5 to 4 mpg highway. I plan on getting one for my 91 80, but a lot more TLC needed first.

Cris,
look at the air intake system on your truck before you put one in. hey its your money but it sounds like snake oil.

Welcome to ih8mud shipmate. I was also in the Navy, an HT. What’s your rate? What ship are you on?

I do not know for fact on the Land Cruiser, but on my 99 Chevy Tahoe, it got worse gas mileage with the cruse control on, ???basically it was trying to keep itself at the set speed. It was constantly trying to speed up by flooring itself all the time. So driving without it was much better.
Can someone confirm this for me on the LC? I am picking up my 100 this Saturday. :D

You're right, I get better mileage without the cruise control, particularly when hilly terrain is involved. You need to take it easy with your right foot though.

So I read some reviews of the K&N filter, and thought I'd give it a try(at least for the on-road stuff), and I actually LOST about 1.5-2 mpg on the freeway. With the OEM filter, I was getting about 16.5mpg @ 75. With the K&N, I got about 15 mpg. So that's pretty much $50 right down the toilet, unless I can return it. . .

Not likely once it has been installed. (would you buy it if you were the next guy?)

Don't waste your time. 91s do best with the stock setup. Trust me. I have tried aftermarket, built a system myself, etc and the stock gear with a wider exhaust is the way to go.
