Had a problem with the voltage regulator awhile back so bought a replacement and it was as bad as the old one I was replacing. I figured it was time to fix it once and for all. I have lots of Ford parts so I set out to adapt it to the landcruiser. They used the same regulator from the 60s to the 80s so they are available everywhere. It was really very easy, no cutting of the stock wiring or anything. I had the regulator and the terminal strip so all I had to buy was the plug at 3.99. Now I get a constant 13.8 volts at the battery with no headlight dimming even with both heater fans running at idle. Wish I had done it years ago. I used this schematic for wiring.

This was on a 1972, it doesn't have a idiot light, I know the later models do so I left that diagram attached though in case someone else could use it.

FYI
Ignition light, idiot light, they all mean the same.
The official name is: NO CHARGE indicator light.

bsevans,

I wanted to follow up with an update on this thread and another one referenced.

Went through that post above and read what this thread's OP had. Got excited and started looking for a SS voltage regulator. Getting tired of the dimming/brightening as I'm driving steady speed.

None to be found for the Nippondenso 026000-2950 for a 78. Spent hours on this. Went through all the links on the other thread. Called four to five part houses. No Luck.

I did find one for the 77 from NAPA that a guy would have to pull the clip and reinsert the spades into the original clip. Problem is No NAPA within 50 miles of here so I will either go the Ford route or tear mine apart and file the points.

I was really wanting a plug and play. Is there somewhere else that someone is aware of these SS regulators are available?

The photo in the beginning of the thread is a direct replacement SSVR I got off the shelf at the alternator/starter rebuild house here in Tucson. There are other post in that thread that have found SSVR from other suppliers. Have you tried going to a rebuild house and see if they carry a direct replacement. I would offer the one off my '78 as I now use an internally regulated alternator but I intend to sell it with the rebuilt alternator off of my '78. It was rebuilt by the same house that told me they wanted to test my VR before they gave me my alternator back.

Maybe try AC Delco E698. Cannot seem to confirm if SS but maybe the parts store can.

Thanks, you didn't have to go looking it up but I do appreciate it. I've looked at Standard, Eschelin, import, etc. I did find one for a 77 at a parts warehouse that was identical to the NAPA one. NAPA wanted like $30 and parts warehouse wanted $50.

I looked the Delco up. Man it does look like a mechanical VR. I say that because it appears that you can take the cap off for the mechanical points? You know looks a little tall. They don't show the backside. However, if I saw the picture of Motorcraft above (without seeing the backside of it) I would have bet it was a mechanical as well.

I may just order one from NAPA for the 77 and change out the clip. I have two mechanical ones in a part bin so it's no big rush but I would love to go to a SS.

Once again Thanks.

The reason I figured it was probably a SS is that AC Delco e641c is a standard points regulator. The cover is riveted on the AC Delco e698 like a SS.

Your probably right.

When I looked at the picture I couldn't bring up in good enough quality/magnification to tell if it was a rivet or a bolt/nut. Hindsight, after reading your last post I think that I must be retarded. They wouldn't build it with a nut and bolt! If it were mechanical it would have tabs, so obviously it is riveted and therefore SS. Vangasman thanks for showing me the error of my ways! I need help sometimes.

Last night before heading home (From work not the bar), I went ahead and tore mine apart and cleaned up the contacts with 600 grit sandpaper. No dimming/brigtening of the lights on the way home. Before I state that this is what solved my problem, I also installed a condensor from another regulator I had on a parts 40. My DD didn't have a condensor but the parts one did. I will have to read up on condensors and what their purpose is.

Thanks for your help. It's kind of nice having steady light output!:clap:
