I'm trying to find a lunch box locker for my Fj80. there are many opinions out here about which one to get. I want to get something in line with Toyota durability and reliability. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Eric

Myself and many others here are using the Aussie Locker. I have no experience with other brands, but the Aussie has been a good locker for my 80 for nearly 4 years.

i have been enjoying my aussie locker for a while. Cheap traction.

Aussie, Detroit, LockRight. Couple of names to search for here. :)

I have a Aussie waiting to be installed here.

I don't get it:

From Aussie website-
"Like all automatic lockers, the "Aussie Locker' cannot be used in front axles of constant 4Wheel Drive vehicles. Some vehicle manufacturers offer a part-time 4WD option and automatic lockers can be installed. Some vehicle owners install part-time kits or use free wheeling hubs."

Except on this page both front and rear lockers are available for the LC...? Aussie Lockers: Toyota T-100 Pick -Up Tacoma 4x2 Tacoma 4x4 4Runner Land Cruiser SUV Pick-up Tundra

Sounds cool to be able to get lockers for around $500 though.

They are avaliable, mening that they fit in the diff. They do not work propperly in the front of an all wheel drive because they cause awkward or flat out bad handling characteristics. You can install a part time kit and run a front Aussie. You can install just Aisin hubs and utilize the center diff lock and run a front Aussie. You CAN run with drive plates and a front locker IF you don't like the way normal vehicles drive and want an adventerous trek every time you get behind the wheel...but you SHOULDN'T.

I run a lock-right in the rear (and front) of my Suzuki Samurai and it defintely gives some funky road characteristics that I've gotten used to over the past 8+ years. Many friends run these or Aussie's in different rigs and they all have different changes in road charcteristics...
So my question is what kind of changes in road characterisitcs would one expect when installing an Aussie into the 80? Any clunking, snapping, binding, torque-steer, excessive wear on axle splines, etc?

Really not much more that some ticking in tight turns. I've only got mine to bind up once when I took a corner hard and goosed it on a rain slick road. It banged real loud and grabbed asphalt until I came out of the turn.

Drive a locked rear without the front driveshaft... Its fun.

I love my Aussie.

So a rear Aussie and front ARB or elocker would be an ok way to go...?

you certainly don't want to have an aussie in the front unless you were trailering your rig.

One side note i noticed. I needed to replace the ujoints in my front driveshaft a while ago. . . no problem, pull the shaft and lock the CDL to get around while i was getting the ujoints. Well, the locked CDL caused my rear aussie to lock up on the street going around turns.

No biggie, but just something to realize. With the aussie or any autolocker in the rear, if you need to drive around with the front shaft out, expect some binding.

But that makes it easier to do donuts in the parking lot. :hillbilly:

Aussie or Lock-Rite... Whatever you can get a better deal on.

x2

I have an aussie in mine and I LOVE it! Best 200 bucks I've spent on my cruiser. You cannot go wrong.

Reviving an old thread but I was wondering how the rear aussie locker been working for you? I was out in some deep wet sloppy snow yesterday and realized a low cost rear locker will likely be in my future. Stock FZJ80 without lockers, 285/75/16 BFG AT's.

Still working flawless. :)

I have used the aussie and the lockright. Both work (and look) exactly the same. I will say the lockright seemed a little quieter and better behaved, but that's probably based on the fact that it was in the back of a heavy wagon, while the aussie was in a pickup. In either case, heavier than standard gear oil will quiet it down some.

I've always said, best BANG/$ modification for any unlocked offroad vehicle. I'd even get one for a 2wd camper van or the like.
