Like the title says. I was/am being told i need to use an HEI/DUI dizzy for my Howell fuel injection set up for a better, hotter spark. Alot of people on here don't care for them over stock, so is this the only option ? Thanks in advance, Mike.

You are installing this on a 2F, correct?

The computer controls the spark curve, correct?

If this is the case, you should be able to use a FJ62 (3FE) distributor, since that is the ‘crank sensor’ for the Toyota EFI, and does not have any advance or retard system in it.

# 1, Yes for a 2F. # 2, Never worked on or installed fuel injection and definitly not a mechanic  , so ? If i find and use an FJ62 dizzy, would i then need the engine side plate with the dent in it for the bigger dizzy ?
This is going to be installed by a mechanic that knows this stuff, but does'nt work on alot of Toyotas and i am just making sure i have everything i need before he does the install. Thanks Steve, Mike

The Howell system requires a electronic dizzy with a tach out-put terminal.... a 60 one will work, but keep in mind you also need the coil / ignitor and a side cover... I have a Howell system on order and can give you some feed back in a week or so... the HEI will be choice in this conversion.....

Which HEI are you using ?

zornff, I know Jim Sickles from Downey was working with the Howell kits for quite a while. I think he ended up getting castings made to build his own custom dizzies for the FI kit. IIRC, they were based off of an S-10 V-6 application. I'm not sure, but I THINK I remember the reason for the custom castings was to get all the GM HEI electronics to fit into a housing small enough not to interfere with the side cover.

If you've got half an hour to spare, you could always call him yourself!;p

Thanks Mark. I will call Downey as i also need fj60 disc brake mounts.

1/2 an hour my foot  . Great guy but a TAD long winded, we went an hour. I now realize that i should use his FI kit instead of Howell  as it sounds very incomplete compared to his and not as specific.

You're welcome.;)

I had the OPPOSITE experience. I paid a tons of cash for a kit (around 1400 or so IIRC..he talked my head off and had me totally convinced, ready-to-buy, etc) that had NO ECM....no throttle body....no custom programming....no ESC, no throttle bracket (unless you call hardware store junk a throttle cable bracket), no dizzy (just instructions on modding your own), basically you get a box with how-to&go here&go there&get this instructions.a few easily and readily availabe parts that EVERYONE stocks (the REALLY important stuff is NOT included), a crappy 2-piece adapter (due to lack of proper throttle bracket to start with I suppose), a o2 sensor (WOW!...lmao)..basically partial kit at best...a HOW-TO-DYI manual and box of the most common and most NOT-Need parts with exception being the nice Painless wiring harness and crappy adapter...the really important stuff TBI, ECM, program, dizzy AREN'T included. I WOULD NOT have anything negative to say if this were sold as a partial kit at well under 1k bucks. So, I spent days/weeks hunting down this and that....I totally regret ever purchasing it as I explained in another thread...In the end I opted for the DUI HEI for TBI that Man-a-fre sells. $$$ but parts are available anywhere anytime, plug-n-play, etc...Prior, I was running an FJ60 dizzy and simply didn't want to mod it and have external module and coil. In a way, it's simpler and cleaner. I've always been rather skeptical at exactly HOW much performance (if any) is gained by a tractor (low RPM) motor by going pointless (no pun intended) and/or HEI. Honestly, I can't tell any difference. I think that anytime you replace 10-30yr old worn out parts---whether carb, dizzy, whatever---with brand new parts, they seem better. I don't think that the HEI was worth the amount I paid for it. Also, I think the live wires are over-rated...If I were to do it again (and I have done the TBI conversion many times) would recommend purchasing MAF's adapters, get a remanufactured ECM ($30 online), mod ECM for flash memory, get program and/or programmer from someone here, all other parts locally minus the wiring harness...I still like the Painless Harness...though I plan to remove all the extra wires (torque converter, etc).
