Well it's time for my California smog. I know I need to investigate what exactly is wrong....BUT

What is the best cat to buy to get a clean bill of smog health??

Last test two years ago, my CO2 and 02 were fine, along with the HC and the CO. But the NO--

Speed MAX AVERAGE MINE MEASURED
15 mph 1062 406 1329 FAIL
25 mph 1073 349 1073 PASS

Something easy for me to bolt on myself would be great. It's just that darn NO
 
Howdy! Vast majority of the time, the Nox failure is EGR related. Can be bad vacuum line, leaky diaphram, or blocked passage in the manifold. All pretty easy to find and fix. Most CATS are the same as far as doing the smog job is concerned. Just put on a cheapy, or go to a muffler shop and have them put on the best fit/least expensive. My son and I gave up on pulling CATS off, so we just install hi performance ones from the local speed shop, and leave them on. JOhn
 
Passing Cali smog

It is not as easy is slapping on a new CAT to pass smog usually. The High NO could mean it is running too lean or a EGR problem.

Do a search in the 60 forum on a couple of dealers online that sell Cats.

Ok, so I read that post and read the state info about the test. Dam, what a pain. I probably should purchase the Toyota emissions manual. I already got the engine and the body ones.

With this strike, money is tight in LA, so I wanna get the most bang for my buck.

So its not as easy as slapping on a new cat and going immediately to a test station?

Will my emissions improvements help my mileage at all?

You have very high numbers. Go through a tune up routine. Spark plugs, wires, timing, set the valves, airfilter etc.

Check to see that the EGR is hooked up and working.

My guess is that you have a disfunctional air injection system and your cat is bad. A new cat with a bad carb or AI will just get plugged again in short order. I installed a new OEM cat, fixed my AI and got a rebuilt carb in order to pass last year. The numbers got amazingly good after that-10% or less of pass across the board.
 
Our experience is that anything mid-80's is a gross pollutor because the OE emissions device is steps from death. Normally Californians can pass a smog test by simply adding a new Cat. (seems to forgive all the remaining emissions poo-poo). We carry a high performance Cat (2 1/2") that is Calif legit up to 1998, or a bolt-in replacement at $144.56, part number #23894.

I purchased a "bolt in" cat on line and it did just that. It bolted in and had a port for the thermosensor. The thermosensor port did require slight modification (I had to cut it shorter).

Can Cat's drop soot levels for a diesel?

I purchased a "bolt in" cat on line and it did just that. It bolted in and had a port for the thermosensor. The thermosensor port did require slight modification (I had to cut it shorter).

I though the tube for thermo sensor was too long, so I cut is shorter with a tube cutter. there is one half of a flange for mounting the thermo sensor. It stays on the tube because the end of the tube is flared. I used my flare tool for flaring brake tubing to flare the cut end so the mounting flange would work.

Ok, I am a rookie. What is a tube cutter? And a flange? Flare tool?
I am gonna google these now.[^^^ I added links above^^^^^]

Allright I have a better idea of what it entails. Wow, that's a lot of work I need to learn. I have a bad parking situation at my apt complex, so I don't have an off-street parking spot for more than a day to safely work on the car. And its my DD.

Need to do something that will take 8-9 hours tops.
Oh well, I am starting my emissions repair work, we shall see how far into the MUD i go.:D
 
Assuming you can get the nuts and bolts off of the one that installed, it shouldn't take too long to swap it out. You pull the old one out, you may have to move the half flange from the old cat to the new one. If you think the tube on the new one is too long, you can cut it off with just about anything suitable--a hack saw or whatever. The flaring tool is nice to have but you might just be able to bend the edge over so the flange won't fall out. You might be able to rent the tool from an autoparts store. You should also have new exhaust seal doughnuts for when you fit the new cat into the exhaust pipe. Out and in again should not take more than two hours. Good luck!
 
I have an 1984 fj60 and live in Ca. Over the years I have purchased several cheapie cat. converters online (around $160) - and I passed smog test with no problem. The easiest way to replace it is to disconnect the tail pipe mountings so that you can slide the cat. converter backwards out of the exhaust pipe. I have never had any problems getting the Oxy. sensor connected.

Willius, you happen to have any pix of the CAT installed... I bought the CAT but the port for the thermosensor points forward, instead of to the rear like the OEM, and the thermosensor cable won't reach that way... Wondering if they gave me the wrong one ?

MAF TY-1950 Hi-Flow Replacement Catalytic Converter FJ40/60

Got one of these on my 60. It's a nice piece, and coupled with MAF's cat-back exhaust, netted me some noticeable performance gains....and that's saying a lot for an otherwise stock 60 Series. Hope your emissions fixes come easily and cheap for you. Cheers.
 
Thanks, Peter, that seems to be the model most people are using... I wanted to use the Hi-flo one from MAF, but I don't know if they "make it work" or I just got the wrong one... Arrow, I presume means direction of flow... And the only way I can get it to fit, is with the "fins" angled down... this may even hit the skid. ?

Possibly, but not for long.
The reason all of the late model truck diesels have such high exhaust gas outlet temps is because they are actually monkeying with the fuel timing to cause a rich condition at the particulate trap (which costs you mileage!). The rich condition causes the fuel to burn in the trap and burn out all of the soot trapped in it.
