Looking to upgrade my square 62 headlights without doing the fancy conversion stuff and was wondering if there are replacements that stand head and shoulders above what is stock on our rigs?
Looked around online and here and most everything was about converting them over...

I put H4 halogen low beams on mine and they have a much different pattern and are brighter, but required no mods. About $100 for the pair. Combined with the high beams, they do well. They are not 'head and shoulders above the rest', really.

Is this just a small bulb type thing? The FJ62 has the square lights with no removable insert/bulb...

Stock 62 headlights are sealed beams, so if you want to upgrade you've got to buy bulbs AND new lens.

I also did what SteveH did, H4's...but I also added H1's. Wow! When wired for all 4 bulbs to light up on 'Brights', major league improvement. Don't really remember how much the total cost was...but it was worth every penny.

if you put brighter halogen bulbs in you’ll want to upgrade your wire harness. ipf makes a good one. if you run LED they require less power and your stock harness will handle it well. i have hella high and lows. they are good and a cheaper alternative to LED but probably not as good. they also have glass housings which break when hit by oncoming rocks. the LEDs typically have polycarbonate lenses which would likely tolerate that better. lots of different discussions about many different brands none of which are absolutely plug and play. some just require moving wires around in a harness. all pretty easy though from my experience.

My 2 round 7 inch led reflector type headlights are PLENTY! I can't imagine having 4 led headlights... You 62 guys have quite the opportunity...

Yes, I am looking for a simple replacement plug in yet the brightest available... Not really looking for the H4 or H1 route, just the best sealed beam type that is 'better'..

All sealed beams are poor and not worth replacing. If you want better lights you have to at least go to H1/H4.

Next is to add a harness.

After that are LED and HID options.

The tip of the apex for 'best available' is the commercial fleet grade, heated LED JW Speaker. And at $900 for all 4 they ought to smooth the asphalt in front of you by melting it as you drive.

I put "better" sealed beams in things before. I never did actually notice any difference at all. But they do always cost more.

Remember, leds do not need heavier wiring. Just a polarity reversal.

So with the H4 and H1 lights one replaces the sealed beam units with new housings that are the same size and use the light that plugs into the back of each housing? Damn, I am old...

yes that’s all. they are a direct fit for the housings and the lights are dead easy to change. it’s just getting the wiring to them right that can take a little head scratching but most of that is documented on mud here so it’s really not that tough. night and day difference for me with my hellas but could be even better with LED which is where i’ll likely go next once the rocks finish off my current housings

i’m also running non DOT approved lights. they are the hella offroad lights and i think they are 80-100w. if you have to have your truck inspected yearly they probably wouldn’t work so then you loose some benifit that i have gained. IMO a properly aimed light with higher watt bulb is still far easier on the eye than a poorly designed or aimed LED of HID so i use them. i’ve never been flashed for having my low beams on

The H4/H1 housings are from the European market and not only do they use a replaceable bulb but they have a much more efficient lens design with very defined light patterns. Just be sure to get ones for the USA market. The ones for drivers on the left hand side of the road are cut the opposite way and the light pattern will be wrong. Best lighting improvement with stock parts. After that a harness upgrade, better battery power and ground cables. And after that LED. LED will be best light out put but most cost for a nice set. Lots of cheap ones on the market.

How did you wire them so all come in at the same time? I’d appreciate the help
