Looking to add an aftermarket remote to my 16 LC as I can't get passed the factory remote start shutting the car off when you open the door and the inability of the system to lock the car when exiting and leaving it running. Some I have been exploring are Viper and Clifford, does anyone have any firsthand experience ?

All aftermarket systems will work exactly the same. This is the intentional design of the vehicle, not a limitation of the remote start.

I realize they will function the same, but was looking for recommendations on which one is best, and integrates the best with the easiest and cleanest install as well as looking for any issues anyone may have run into with the installation. I would also would love to find one with a transponder so I would not need to carry 2 fobs, but there does not seem to be any one that has been able to integrate that

One advantage of the Toyota unit is that it works with the factory key fob, and the install is clean.

I have a CompuStar unit in mine. There is an antenna on the windshield, and yeah I have to carry a second fob. The thing has a surprisingly long range, and there is feedback on the little display on the fob that tells you if the engine started. But, the engine still quits when I open any door (but not the rear hatch).

I had one of these once. Second fob, yes. But small. It did not shut the engine off when opening the door. The car also had the Toyota remote start- both worked and didn't step on each other. It just depends on how the shop wires it up and which modules they use to deal with the immobilizer. If they use something that instructs the car to start like the factory remote start would- then yes it will shut off when the door opens. However, if they use something that emulates a person starting the car - break press + start button. Then no, it won't shut off when the door is opened. Keep in mind the latter systems usually have a spare key installed in the unit to interact with the immobilizer.

Key features I would look for is that the car does not shut off when a door is opened or unlocked. And take over mode- so you can leave the car running and locked during quick stops.

Take over mode is where the car behaves like it was started via the remote. While the car is running you can press a button the remote to enter take over mode. Then leave and take the keys with you. When you get back, with the key on you, you press the start button to exit take over mode. If someone gets in and presses the break without the key- it shuts off.

Also pre-made harness' are available now to minimize on wire cutting. Really just depends on the shop doing the install. Be sure to ask them lots of questions.

I plan to install this or something like it on mine... just haven't done it yet or found a shop near by.

I had a Python on my physical key Acura MDX and you could open the door, insert the key, turn it to "On", and drive off. If you stepped on the brake before turning the key to "On" it would shut off. Opening the door didn't kill the engine though. Mine did not require a separate key to be stored inside the vehicle, but it did require you to insert the key and turn to "On" to drive off.

I agree with @LoveHateToyota - I suspect if they wire it right the system can override the "door opened" circuit. I don't know if the system could then detect the key inside the vehicle and continue to run though... agreed that might require you to stash a key inside, which is no bueno IMO.

Does Toyota offer an OEM remote start that you can install?

My 2013 has an OEM remote start. I believe it was a dealer-installed option. I assume it is still available.

The second fob is no big deal to me. I only use remote start in the winter, so I always have a jacket to stash the fob.

The other cool thing about the CompuStar is you can have the remote tell you the current temp and battery voltage in the truck at any time. There are several auxiliary functions that can be used to remotely close windows or turn stuff on. I may look at trying to remotely turn on roof rack lights, if I ever get some installed.

There seem to be some aftermarket models that don't require a second FOB..just 3 presses of the Unlock button and the car starts. Anyone tried one of these ..price is around $249 for kit.

Check out roseville toyota. On sale with free shipping under accessories with coupon on ther parts page.

The aftermarket ones that use the same fob work just like the OEM one. Which means it has the same drawbacks.

IMO if you want to keep the same fob - get the OEM one. Cleaner install IMO and is located on the passenger side out of the way versus the drivers side. You can install it yourself if inclined, or have a dealer do it. You need a laptop with tech stream to enable it. (sample instructions attached)

That is how the OEM starter works.

They discontinued the "kit" for 2010 but you can still get the parts. Here's the ECU. Ping your Toyota parts center of choice and let them know what you're up to. They can line up the individual part numbers and replacement part numbers. You'll need the rest of the kit contents like the wire harness, stickers, etc...

This is just the ECU and doesn't include the rest of the kit (wiring, tags, stickers, etc..) for install.

For a 2014 this is the kit - $399 MSRP - 2014 Toyota Land Cruiser Remote Engine Starter. Preset, LiActivates, Settings - PT39860140 - Genuine Toyota Accessory

I've found McGeorge to have the best prices. Having said that if you ping your parts house of choice they'll often match pricing.
