Sorry, searched and didn't find. Can anybody tell me (or point me to) the right steps to bench test my starter? I may have screwed up and burned it up last night while trying to do that.

jumper cables to a battery -/+. - to starter frame + to large battery cable post (that you removed cable from to pull starter). jumper wire from + clamp to small wire connection (that you also removed)on starter will pull in solenoid and starter will turn. If it wont do anything attach + clamp quickly to internal cable that goes from solenoid to inside starter motor. If motor turns, motor is probably ok and problem is with internal solenoid contacts.

OK, yeah I did it wrong. I'll test it like you indicated first and see what happens, then I'll pull it apart and see what I burned up. I did + to +, - from battery to the other large contact on the starter, then I ran + from battery to solenoid contact and held it there. Pretty sure there was smoke. Thanks.

Sounds like shorted through solenoid contacts. Maybe just toasted them alone. Those are the famous replacement PM and inexpensive to maybe no problem as long as the heat didn't melt any of it. Never had one apart on mine IDK how exactly held in . Look for heat damage around where the big posts go through and contacts to them.

Most auto parts stores will test it for you. You can open up the solenoid (magnetic switch) by removing the three 8mm bolts on the cover and check out the condition of the contacts and plunger; easy to replace.
