Do you know how long the serpentine belt has been on there?
Sounds like it could be a bearing in the tensioner or idler pulley. Take some WD40 and spray on the center of the bearing one at a time to see if the sound lessens or goes away.

If you can't locate it with a stethoscope take the serpentine belt off, start the engine. If you still hear the noise it, it's on the timing belt. If you don't hear it spin all the serp belt pulleys to find which one(s) is in distress. You'll need a 14mm socket on the serp belt tensioner pulley (counter clockwise) to take tension off the belt. Note belt route or find a belt diagram.

We had very similar noise 1.5k km ago. Replaced the serpentine belt & idler, noise went away. Upon inspection, the old idler pulley bearing appeared to be very worn.

I second @97 AZ LC's suggestion.

This is the trick!

My 2UZ has been very slowly making more and more pulley noise in the last year. Last week I finally had a peek in there and did the screwdriver trick, unfortunately my screwdriver wasn’t long enough to get from the pulley to my ear but I could definitely feel some vibration in my hand from the tensioner pulley. I ordered a new tensioner (interestingly enough the pulley alone was more expensive than the tensioner with pulley from McGeorge) and a new belt. I still had a little doubt in my mind so just now I sprayed a little PB Blaster on the tensioner pulley, fired it up and the noise disappeared. Don’t know why I didn’t think of this sooner, thanks for the tip!

Quick update - got a new serpentine belt since that's the easiest thing to replace and will allow me to test the bearings while the belt is off. No obvious bearing noise and the car is much quieter with the new belt. WIll have to wait for a cold/damp day to see if it holds up but so far so good.

This is a cool trick for locating bearing noise

Yeah I came across this video the other night and thought that was pretty trick as well. Wish I had a jug that would fit it though (damn recycling craze!!). I have a light noise coming from one of mine and belt looks pretty new (need to check records as I remember seeing) so I am assuming that it is one of the two. Not overly loud for mine so I will handle when I have some time, other more pressing matters at the moment that are taking money on the cruiser.
