Bellview winch bumper?

I'll add to that set as needed. Looks like the end plate location is not quite the ideal location that I thought - I get more like 12-3/4", but since the end plate isn't fixed, perhaps the right thing is to make the holes 13" apart and let the cap float to fit properly.

Spool is 8.5" wide.

Looks like my winch is early enough that there is not a pressed-in grease cap in the end plate, but a zerk that supplies grease to the bearing through the shaft. The zerk was missing, which is why I didn't figure it out at first.

I've been following this thread for a few days since it came back up. I bought one of these and then called John Witt who is near Minneapolis. 852-927-8811. He can give you lots of information on these, but he is not on the Web anywhere. I bought a bunch of parts from him to ensure I have everything to make this work. It is still in the garage, but I'll have it together this summer. I bought a HFS 8274 bumper due to it's thickness over a year ago and I am going to have an extesion welded to the plate onto the right side to make this work. I remember seeing these winches back in the early '70s and they were known as a very good one. Too bad Warn didn't keep the same mounting for all of their winches after they acquired this one from Belleview. We wouldn't be having this problem. :meh:

Let us know how that works out ... I'm not certain that there's enough room between the frame rails, but it would be nice to learn that there is. Are you going to get it all powdercoated again?

I realized the other day that I haven't tried to make this motor turn for a while. I hooked it to my 55A battery charger and the charger just groans. How much starting current do these things take? :hhmm:

I agree, it's a strong, dead simple unit and very period looking. I drilled the bottom of the case for a drain plug. I have the switch (needs a small repair) and control cables, but will have to make up some battery cables. Do you know where the firewall is meant to be penetrated for the control cables?

It seems like it will be fine as long as I use the existing left side holes. I will post back up here when I get around to doing this. I basically posted to get in here and let you guys know that you are not alone and to subscribe to the thread.

Not powdercoating since the bumper already has nicks. I wheel it whenever I can. Rust is not too bad of a problem here unless you drive in the salt during the winter. :(

I had to see/hear this run before I got my money out. It is pretty strong. I like it for it's simplicity and cool 1960/1970s factor. I would fab/weld this myself if I had the old Lincoln Arc welder I sold for dirt ten years ago before I moved out here. :bang:
 
Ok, here are two pictures of my Warn 5687 and the HFS 8274 bumper. I now think it will fit fine without any welding. I'll probably post a new thread to show the progress. I don't want to hijack this one. Please excuse the garage moccasins. :whoops:

Just to be sure ... on your winch, are there six mounting holes? Is the spacing for the outermost holes about 13"? I ask because these photos from CCOT

make me think that the (current?) plate isn't big enough to take holes that are 13" apart, such as my winch has.

Warn changed the dimensions of this winch family over the years - perhaps yours is narrower than the Bellview?
 
It has 6 holes... It's spacing is 11 3/8" apart and the farthest ~13" instead of the 8274's 4 holes @ 10 inches apart. Both have 4 1/2" spacing between top and bottom holes. The 13" hole will be very near the edge, which is ok by me. :D I can work around it some how. I matched up the holes on the left side on the outer spool and the four holes on the right are completely covered by the plate with about 1/8" to spare. I am going to have to mount the winch before mounting the bumper to the frame of the cruiser so I can get a rachet in behind the bumper and between the plate to tighten the lower two bolts. That should make the bumper and winch weigh in about 125lb together
 
FJ40Zen Thanks for the pics. I am in the same boat. I was going to try to cut the plate on my current bumper & re-weld to a new one but it does look like the CCOT HFS bumper will work with some drilling. Way easier than custom fabbing the plate & re-powder coating. The SOR heavy duty 8274 winch bumper looks like it might work also with some drilling? Both are the same price. Any pics of the final installation?

I am trying to figure out if the SOR Heavy Duty Brush Guard will fit with the Bellview. On top of having the Bellview the brush guard will also need to clear my bumper tow hook rings.....eyi yi yi. SOR doesn't have deminsions since they are all in boxes so I am going to have to measure off a friends rig.

Anybody have the SOR brush guard mounted with a Bellview 5687?
 
The drum shaft on my Belleview is currently seized. If I can salvage the thing, I'm planning on swapping the motor for a Ramsey 8k replacement unit with power in/out. 3/16" should be plenty strong; 1/4" channel will add a lot of undesirable weight.

I have been quite the slacker since summer started. I need to get my holes drilled and get the winch cleaned up and mounted. :hillbilly:

Yeah, I'm pleased. I've got a ways to go before it's on the rig, though - have to clean up and mount the control cables (hints welcome!), get some electrical cables made up (probably from Urban Land Cruisers) ... and buy some synthetic line. I already re-manufactured the broken pieces of the original power switch.

Man, I hate those rivets. It would be easier to remove them if I had a compressor at the cabin :bang: At least there are only four.
 
Guess this post is dead, just wondering if anyone was able to mount the Bellview on a 8274 bumper as mentioned above.

Kind of off subject but I was able to fit the Spector Grill & Brush guard on my bumper with the Bellview 5687. It's a tight fit but it clears everything on the winch...looks like a pretty mean front end also.
 
The thread isn't dead, we're just slow...

I ran into a little trouble getting the bumper that HawkDriver made mounted on my '40. I think I know how to get around that and will try over Labor Day.

Don't know if FJ40zen has made any progress on getting his winch on the HFS...

Show us pics of your brush guard!
 
I thought I was going to have to do some serious notching here and there to get the brush guard to fit but it ended going on no problems. I also have shackle rings on the front so I thought at a minimum I was going to have to cut those off but was able to reverse the front uprights and do no real modifications. The brush guard looks pretty good for the money and it also gives a nice front end visual marker when pulling in/out of tight spots.
