Bellview winch bumper?

I got the bumper/winch with the truck....PO only flipped the truck for money so he didn't know anything about it's history....lucky me. The bumper actually has a little damage to it but it's not worth the pain in the ass to replace. I am thinking that if I ever replace it I will just cut the plate off & weld back onto the new bumper.

In terms of cables mine go through the firewall next to the steering shaft. Three holes for the three cable lines and they connect straight to the winch controls mounted on the bottom lip of the dash just below the headlight switch.
 
Power switch is just behind the controls. Here's a pic of the wiring through the firewall...I've gotta re-paint this area soon. PO laid down too much glue when he installed the carpet.

Here are my delayed pictures of the 8274 HFS bumper install. I think it will be fine, but I may want to weld on something to fully capture the outside bolts to the plate. The outside holes are notched, which made an easy install. I need to get the brake installed and the two cables attached. The cable has been temporarily spooled up until I can find something to attach to later to spool it up tight. Man, this winch is fast like the 8274! I hope it pulls well.

I finally got the control cables repaired and mounted (no pics yet). I've ordered some heavy duty electrical cabling from Urban Land Cruisers. Now I'm looking at synthetic winch line...

My inclination is to go with the olive drab (sorry, "hunter green") Amsteel Blue line. 5/16" diameter is stronger than the steel cable I got rid of. I can probably fit 150' on the spool ... but do I need/want that much? I've got a 50' extension in my recovery bag already.

Or should I use a shorter length of 3/8" on the spool? Strikes me as way overkill for a "6000#" rated winch, even if it is really an 8000# winch.

What about a hook?
 
Chris looks good, glad to know there are some alternatives out there in case I ever need a new bumper. After a long while, some beers and a meeting of cruiser-heads we were finally able to fire up my bellview. All it took was a little oil and some grinding away of all the corrosion on the contact and power cable points. Below are a couple shots of the power source connection and starter. We had some problems getting the in cab clutch to engage and disengage all the way but we think the problem is just a bad/old cable. I can still operate with the controls inside, just need to engage/disengage the clutch sometimes from the side of the winch. You're right Chris, this winch is fast!

Nice job! I like where you mounted the switch; my cable isn't long enough to come all the way around like that, so I came across the engine. Need to make a cable support and then take some photos.

And it looks like you have the same POS bent steel bracket as I do!
 
Hey Chris did you end up buying new gaskets at all? I've got a small oil leak on the winch I want to resolve. Looks to be coming out of the "big circle" jst below the brake drum.

Well, something like that. The winch finally has power and control. I got David at www.urbanlandcruisers.com to make me some power cables that match their "power trip" battery cables. While I was at it, I put in a stainless tray from http://www.stainlesstrays.com/, too...

Now I need to get a winch cable! Suggestions welcome (see my previous post in this thread).

Calixto, I didn't do any gasket work. I took the gearbox side plate off to clean out the ancient hardened grease and drilled a drain for the sump. It all went back together just fine.

I have to imagine that the shaft seal that is leaking is going to be a pretty standard part...

Just had a long conversation with the folks at Rockstomper and decided to order 150' of 5/16" synthetic with just a thimble. Now I'm trying to understand how to attach the line - it appears that there is some sort of clamping mechanism inside the drum? The set screw is in the 'wrong direction' to hold the lug end of the rope.

The Warn directions that are elsewhere on ih8mud indicate that this is the way it works... but it seems sort of weird.
 
Finally, it's a winch! 150' of 5/16 fits with no problem at all, once I figured out how to anchor the end.

It came with a copper lug that wouldn't fit in the hole; I expected this. The tape wrap extended beyond the base of the lug, so I cut it off. The channel inside the drum doesn't move at all (I had sort of hoped that tightening the set screw caused it to clamp) - the set screw is just meant to tighten down on the cable. I tried to feed the rope around in the 'right' direction but failed miserably. For some reason, it was easy to get about six inches in following the 'wrong' direction - I ultimately decided that it didn't really matter. I guess that a slightly smaller lug could have been made to fit in the hole and to be held down by the set screw.

Then it was just a matter of getting the rope on with semi-decent wraps and stretch. My cable controls need some adjusting, especially the clutch engagement - I can't manage that from the dash at all. I know that some of that is because I increased the outer diameter of the cable sheath too much (with heat shrink to make it pretty) and now it's interfering with the control arm at the winch!

Nice Chris! BTW do you know what size bolts/pattern the bolts are that hold the two cases together? I pulled a couple to find some replacements but the 2-3 I pulled out are deteriorating on the ends to the point of not being able to figure out the correct thread. I don't want to pull anymore out until I can get some replacements.

Good luck with that. There's a seal part number on that list, too, which a good supplier should be able to turn into something modern. While you've got the case apart, be sure to drill and tap for a 1/8NPT drain plug!

Looks like my next job is a clutch ... oh boy oh boy.
 
Crap, not sure I want to hunt down a seal. You don't think black Permatex will do the trick?
 
Hoping to reuse whatever seal there is on the shaft. Permatex just for the end plate. Guess I will find out when I crack this thing open.
 
So I finally got around to fixing the leak on this winch when I did my head gasket project. Man, it had a lot of oil in it. After cleaning up a bit I can now clearly see the fill line on the side. Here are two shots of the two halves when the winch is cracked apart. I wanted to post these pics on here in case someone else is wondering about working on theirs. Pretty simple and easy to work with. You can see where the old permatex sealant failed on mine. As warned be careful with the "little rods" in the one bearing (circled in red) or they will fall out. Not a big deal but just make sure you put them back together before re-assembling. I would also suggest taking the winch off the bumper...I didn't do this and it was kind of a pain in the ass.

Also I broke one of the bolts heads off during disassembly. Worked for 2 hours trying to get it out with no luck. Finally sprayed it with some PB Blaster let it sit overnight then hit it with a propane torch for about a minute and it came right out.
