Hey Folks.
Adding a resource for anyone in need.
Glass Tek - Windshield and Auto Glass Repair and Replacement
located in Alameda. They have 155, 5 star ratings on yelp and really deserve it.
This shop seriously kicked ass, way beyond what safelite monkeys could ever dream of being able to offer.
The owner, Marcel, emailed me after I made an appointment and said he would not be there on that day and asked if I could reschedule to any other day so he could do the install personally.
He knew exactly how to do it right, explained every step as if it were outta the FSM.
They didn't leave a mess, and even re-affixed my oil change sticker on the new glass.
They ordered 2 windshields, so I could pick which tint I wanted in person. They can order the OEM gasket. Or glass.
The receptionist knew my name when I walked in for the appointment.
Cost was $386 for aftermarket glass.(ymmv).

Thanks. That's great info. I am in need of a new windshield and I may end up there.

However, it's a bit of a drive for me. Anyone have any recommendations for a shop in the (Bay Area, CA) South Bay or Mid-Peninsula?

You might try reaching out to B-Line body shop in San Jose, they do a lot of BMW stuff and may have a referral. In the north bay, Teeters & Shacht in Novato.

Thanks for the rec...I'm in Oakland and will definitely give them a call when it's time for a new windshield.

Maybe there should be some sort of sticky for regional vendors/experts who know how to work on LCs. I am working with a great mechanic here in Reno who is a Subaru and Audi master tech, and we are working through various Land Cruiser issues and building expertise. It is working out great -- they are not a known LC shop, but the work is meticulous.

^ ha, welding...

I remember my old man (rip) welding a bunch of exo-skeleton stuff on his patrol 3 decades or so ago now. He had put some blankets over the glass/metal areas to protect, but of course not welding blankets and so balls of molten metal (stick welding) did their number on both the front and rear glass. Impressive how quickly molten metal will melt the surface of glass.

The insurance he had in oz had full glass coverage, so out with a suitable heavy metal object and broken front glass and rear glass. He filed a claim for 'stone' damage and had both replaced. Not sure what tale he spun to cover damage to glass on opposite ends of the vehicle...

cheers,
george.
