Jan,

More questions :grinpimp: Thanks in advance btw..

Bahia-Los Angeles and San Ignacio..

How long were you in that area? I've found 2 places there that are a must see...going to take Scuba gear too.

San Francisquito and Camp Gecko and they say they are near San Ignacio?

Also, in that area, do you know anything about Hotel Punta Pescadaro?

I think the focus for this trip is going to be primarily the Cortez side in this area for Scuba and Spear Fishing...wondered what your thoughts were.

I have been to Bahia many times now. Camp Gecko is just a few miles south of Bahia on the beach. I have never been there myself, but heared good things about it.

San Francisquito is a 5 hour trip on a dirt road south of Bahia. I was not too impressed with the village itself, there is very little there, maybe it is more busy in summer. The location is great, but we did not even find a place to get a beer.

San Ignacio is much further south, and inland. From Bahia to San Ignacio it is 220 miles. You can either take the paved road out from Bahia to Punta Prieta, then the #1 south til Ignacio, or, like we did, the dirt road from Bahia to Francisquito to El Arco to the #1 (it hits the #1 south of Guerrero Negro) and then on to San Ignacio.

The Cortez side is much better for diving and fishing, since the water is warmer, and the sea much calmer with many more fish. I have been down there 8 times by now, and never seen the pacific remotely calm-and it never gets warm.

Don't know Punta pescadero, sorry. we always camp...

jan

Thanks Jan...after many hours of research. Bahia L.A. area and South is the plan.

San Francisquito is supposed to have great diving...it's the 70 mile dirt road from B L.A. that's a bitch from what I hear, but you just traveled it..so that's very encouraging.

Of the 4 weeks there, only 5 days will be on the Pacific Side...in Bahia Asuncion.

the road is not so bad,and the landscape is stunning.

The Viscaino peninsula (where bahia Asuncion is) is one of my least favorite areas in Baja. The washboard is terrible on the roads (last time I was there I ripped both shocks through my shockmounts on the BJ70 :D). But mostly, there is very little to see there, since it is so dry.

a beautiful area on the pacific side is the small road up the coast from Sant Rosalillita. beautiful beaches, with lots of big clams...
here are 3 pics from that area:

cheers,

Damn sweet rig Jan..drool!

Well, after hours of researchin' your spot on about your assesment. I'm doing the B&B there (Juan and Shari's) new web site in return for full accomodations and fishing for 5 days or so. Might not spend quite 5 days as hitting the good dive sites is a priority and they are all in the BLA area.

It's funny, you and Pappy were on the same stretch there just on different days of the same week. Best I can figger by his trip report.

Just got back from San Francisquito the Road is in very good shape except for a few wash outs just south of Bahia de Los Angeles It took 3.5 hours with a few picture stops. If you are spear fishing either the north or south end of the bay are excellent near the rocky cliffs. The restaurant had no food but it did have beer. Camping is 10 dollars per night per person 20 dollars for a cabana (2 beds in a hut). There are hot saltwater showers. The fishing is excellent .

If you are coming in from bay of la you should have no problem getting gas but be prepared if you have to wait a day or 2 for it. Both gas stations in town had no electricity to pump Friday thru Tues last week not sure when or if they got fixed. There was a guy in a toy pickup driving into town with a couple of 55 gallon drums he would park at the older station. about 3 dolars a gallon.

Well they have till August to get it fixed... Heard that's the way it is in a few places I plan to visit. Will bring an extra filter or 2 and a nice cloth for the fillups.

The 22r out to do okay per tank but going to bring an extra 15 gallons in Jerry cans to be safe.

Agree. Great beaches north of Santa Rosalillita.

Did you guys have to get fishing license to do that? What about bait? artificial or were you buying live bait or catching it?

You don't need a license to fish off the beach. You DO need a license if you go out on a boat, like with Juan. The license can just about only be purchased from one agency in San Diego. I just went through this. They are VERY efficient, and I'll give them both thumbs up.

I sent them my $22.90 on a Thursday FedEx with a return envelope and airbill. They received it Friday morning and had it on the way back Friday afternoon.

Also, make sure you get your Tourist Card at the border. You will need it crossing at GN into Baja Sur. They no longer issue at San Felipe, as I found out this trip, and they told me the process has changed. The VISAs are only issued a the border stations, not further down.

Hey Pappy
Are you back home? Where did you end up that night?

Yep, I'm back a day earlier than planned. Crossed the border on Wed and slept in my bed on Thursday.

I made it to Mission Santa Maria that night and stayed two. The road in was not too bad. The road out was another story. It was locker on several times.

Great pics, was down there myself this winter in my Hdj81 ( diesel cheap!) Great place for an outdoors road trip. We seem to have gone to most of the same places as you but also got to the deep south (cabo, unfortunatly!) cheers Tony
