Just returned from a trip to Baja with my brother. We stayed for 10 days, drove 3500 km, mostly over bad roads.
It was spectacular, great landscape, great food, great people. The truck held up great, and we had only 3 flats, and one small electrical repair.
A few tips:
Take 2 spares. If you get stranded in some of the backcountry places, you are stranded for a long time.

Make sure you have a good tent. the winds can be brutal. The Columbus roof top tent held up great, and a small tent for my brother (Northface) was good too.

Good shoes are a good idea-see pics.

A great map is essential. If you don't know where all the small roads are, you'll never find them. The Baja Almanac is by far the best.

The missions are beautiful, especially San Javier.

The whales in the Laguna San Ignacio are extremely cool.

I'll be happy to anser questions about places...but mostly will let the pics do the talking. I have some 600 pics, but will not put up all :D

The route was San Diego-Bahia des los Angeles-San Francisquito-San Ignacio-Mulege-San Javier-Loreto-Agua Verde, and back.

Lets start:
Landscape and cacti on the way to Bahia Los Angeles

The beach in Bahia, a nice fish and the camp. It was extremely windy...

more Bahia, with a nice bass that ended up on the barbecue later.

Clams-very good to eat, and plentiful. Then some repairs on the electrics, and then on route to San Francisquito, along the sea of Cirtez, and through the moountains.

more landscape-there were lots of flowers, it must have rained recently. Also, a good idea to bring good shoes. Pretty much everything stings here...

Out to the beach, on the Cirtez side. Lots of scorpions everywhere. It is totally cool to search for them at night with a UV light, since they glow...
and more good food.

some of the roads are not so good...
the road to San Javier, is spectacular, with a little river in there, where one can actually jump in and cool off.

on the road to Agua verde, on the beach driving in to the campsite, and some big hermit crabs running around at night.

and finally we had to go back. If there is nothing to light a fire with, the old Agave blossoms always work.
and finally back in the hell in Tijuana.

Diesel for 3500 km $300
repairs $30 for flats
food $200 for 2
a trip with my much younger brother, whom I did not know well priceless

Jan,

I've been waiting for this thread :grinpimp:

Spectacular pics...very motivating to say the least.

Did you guys have to get fishing license to do that? What about bait? artificial or were you buying live bait or catching it?

How were the fuel stops? What kinda range is needed? You guys seemed to wonder a bit which is what I'm plannin'.

What caused all the flats? Sharp stones, volcanic glass? Road hazards? 2 tires makes sense....

How was sleeping on the ground? Did your brother have any issue with scorpions in the tent etc?

Did you guys do any night driving?

Sorry man for all the Qs... Your pics gave me some ideas..

did you fix the flats yourself at first or wait till you found some llanteras?
