I took the morning off and ran some errands. Went way down into the hood to get a new belt for this truck. While I was out I swung by Lou’s for Pork Chop Thursday

Got back and got the throttle bracket painted and on the truck

Next the Wizard made me an air cleaner mount yesterday that bolts to the Saginaw bracket

Next I pulled the auxiliary tank to see what it looked like back there and inside.

Yikes. All rust inside.

that throttle bracket is so cool

It's is, but single circuit brake master? I like original, but even I upgraded to dual circuit!

I thought I read brakes were upgraded to disks?

Yep. The brake system was upgraded disc/disc and they work good. It’s in the “if it ain’t broke” category.

You want that beard seat back for it, it is as when you sent it, never used.

Nah. Using the jump seats

I love jump seats, I'm ok with roll bars, but don't like what happens when skulls in people riding in jump seats collide with roll bars when you hit a pot hole or something stupid like that.

I grew up in the 60s and despise the American safety obsession, but jump seats and roll bars are where I draw the line.

Maybe his kids can wear helmets 🙄

Second trip deep in the Jxn MS hood for this project to my guys at Watkins Radiator with the aux tank this morning. They said no problemo.

Got home and tackled the 4Plus rear tire carrier install.

Y’all give @lcwizard a call and get you one while the getting is good.

I bought a pair of long jumpseats that had been installed around a roll bar. The installer just cut off the short brackets holding them to the tub wall and welded in long ones to clear the roll bar.

Problem is, that pushed the bottom bumpers out too far to be supported by the inside fender well, so they moved the bottom bumpers further back, but this significantly weakened the seats, causing welds to fail and warpage of the seats themselves. You can see how fragile the early long seat setup is on these non-roll bar seats.

What these really need, especially if you are moving the seats inboard to avoid roll bar, is some folding seat legs like these:

This is much stronger and eliminates the need for those weak little bumperettes.

Don't want to be a pain; just pointing out an issue I've seen with long jump seats and roll bars. I'm curious in how you address it.

BTW, long troop seats, or jumper seats, are one of the coolest things about these early rigs.

Those look kid friendly to me. Build character in the little ones.
Kid friendly maybe not but kid fun 100% kids love side facing seats like this. and adults honestly. I have bee using my 40 some this summer for our kayak tours. I throw 4 people in the back and tow the kayak trailer to the spot we are putting in. makes it easy to talk to them about the history of the island I live on and chat before the tour. And its fun because the top is off and the window is down haha. cant fit 4 in the back with a fold and tumble seat

Agreed that the folding leg option is the best and most elegant. However, unable to source a pair of long jump seats with folding legs, and having moved our jump seats inboard to accommodate a roll bar, I opted to use 2" angle as supports for the bumpers.

Sidebar. Package from Mosley arrived

So I went to remove the TSLs and they damn wheels had locking lug nuts. I then dug into the glove box to try to find it. Holy hell. What a pack rat this guy is…..along with a few mice. I think this is all the maps and papers from his Baja trip.

The Dobinsons leaf spring concept is so radically different than these old HFS.

IMG_3398.webp

The old suspension fought hard to stay with the truck. All these old H style shackles are always over tight and the shackles are just frozen in place. Every time. I had to burn out the frame bushings.

Rear is done. Flip kit installed. Ubolts trimmed. Positively superior IMS shocks in place. The old HFS shocks may possibly be worse than OME yellows. Maybe.

I have to go get brake pads for the rear tomorrow before I put the tires back on. He has managed to almost wear them out. That’s pretty legit for rear discs.
