Builds Baja 69 40 - Tilda Bogue Service Station

The next two builds on the books will stray a bit from the norm.

This one is getting a JimC carb. Dobinsons of course. 4Plus of course. Owner does not want it to change much except in the reliability and drivability department.

Check this damn thing I found chasing a monster purple wire ……

That was a great amp and a good way to hear your tunes over the swampers!!,

@wngrog should start a preservation society for the rigs that come though Tilda Bogue, could add a nice patina’d dash plague, heck maybe even get fancy and number them!!

Love Cruisers with stories!

I capped off the return on the carb when I was cruising my LV. No issues and ran it for several years like that.
I also have to fab up some throttle cable bracket on my fake 45. I plan to work on that tomorrow. I made a set up for the LV and will probably build something similar. I will take good pictures and hopefully it will help you too.

Subscribed for the fuel return T info and carb cable bracket conundrum and resolution.

I was unable to figure out a good way to make a custom early cable to late carb bracket and routing. Ended up using the 1973 cable to linkage to carb gizmo, not sure if applicable here?

If you run the correct early fuel pump, can't you just put a plug in the carb "return" port? Early 40's had no fuel return line.

Good to know. That’s easier than running a line back to the back.

As for making a return work on an early tank, you can make a T at the filler vent.

I don’t do that with a Sniper due to the volume of the return but it works fine with a carburetor to do that.

I’m going to cap it. Anyone know the proper cap size?

This is how I did it on the Delta Beast. This is a Weber bracket and cable. The linkage was long gone. I’d do this again but this truck does not have a booster to hook it to

Would be easier to shelve the late model carb and find an earlier one with the correct fuel line and throttle cable bracket.

Not when it takes 8 months to get a JimC carburetor, no.

I ran a 2F 60 carb on my 1968. It’s not a big deal, it’s just a deal.

Well, TBH, i don’t know the size. The photo album in my brain was showing me a carb with a plug already installed as i recall my 12/79 carb having a plug where the return port is. Confirmed by visiting SOR website, see photo from Spector carb identifier.

If you cant find a plug, you can use a short piece of round solid stock, same diameter as the fuel line you would use, along with the olive and nut and install it on the end of that return banjo fitting and it would work as a plug.

That’s what I did. Put a olive flare in the line and used some beverage clamps

Morning work.

Valve job (cold and tight)

Replaced the fuel filter. I’ll be pulling the under seat tank when I replace the 3 speed with the 4 speed so I’ll be able to look and see where this rust is coming from. I hope it’s not the auxiliary tank. That looks like a big ole can of worms to pull

Replaced the NGK with the proper Denso. Plugs looked decent. Told a bit of a story. Rich ass Weber carbs usually do.
IMG_3271.jpeg

Stabbed the DUI…..plumbed the carb to the fuel pump. Had to get some push on fittings for the pump

Smashed a couple of Hot Dogs for lunch and headed back to the shop. I busted Cowboy loafing in the back. She’s got that sleep head going here

I’m pretty much done under the hood until I get items back from powder so I moved underneath. First thing I noticed on my rear drive was that the steering was crazy sketchy. Beyond Super Swamper sketchy. I investigated and saw a couple of issues.

The straight Pitman arm that had the drag link angle so severe and the pitman arm rod end was the wrong size completely and was walking around. The mechanic had added extra washers for good measure.

Luckily Cruiser Outfitters sells the 2” drop Pitman arm and the correct drag link and ends that you can have Chevy on one end and Toyota on the other.

Now the angles look great. Will look better with the 2.5” springs.

As I would never drill holes in the fenders for lights, this one had them done and they were 30 or more years old. They got chopped off and replaced with the same style modern LED KC Daylighters

That’s after I did some body work on the passenger fender I got it bent out and discovered all of the fender frame bolts are sheered off in the frame. That’s going to suck ass to fix.

All of the fluids got drained. Front axle was clean but the rear was full of water. Neither of them had the caps on the axle vents so I added a couple of extended vent kits I had here.

Familiar territory, mine even had holes with brackets on the A-pillars.

What’s the round dent above the license plate holder. Did Baja get shot?

Looks like someone installed a second swingout at some point. See the bracket? That’s where the “bumpers” are that always dent the doors.

You should see how bad this 34” LTB shakes on the stock tire carrier.

@lcwizard to the rescue

Dirty work today.

Replaced both pinion seals and flanges. These were leaking and one had been destroyed by barbed wire

Then I got it ready to pull the transmissions and transfer.

I’ve never seen where someone has used a 2F pressure plate with an F flywheel.
IMG_3306.jpeg

The clutch slave rod was broken in 2 No idea how it was still working and staying together

Out with the old. This one lived a hard life
