What about a REgear?

I dont speak metric so your size is pointless to explain to me without converting it to std,

If you've gone up considerably your subconsciously lugging the engine as it will be out of its torque curve and all the advertised "power" is misleading you...

just a thought

This may sound dumb, but make sure you are in 5th gear with the 5AT. The way the gated shifter is set up on these, many people get in the FJC and slam it into gear and they are in "4", not 5th. Driving at 75-80 in 4th will kill your mpg. I've seen it.

RE: Bad Gas Mileage

:frown: Even with all the tips that you are getting here and good ones they are, 10mpg is wrong in every way. Maybe if you were running 315's with a 6 inch lift I could see you drop that low. I'd ask the dealer for a check and see what they find. My FJ40 gets a whopping 14 MPG at 70 and I thought that was bad! I own a 07 Tacoma double cab 4x4 with 265's and it will get 330 miles a tank ( around 18 gallons) when I stick strictly around the city. In the highway, I have a heavy foot and can get 350 miles on the same 18 flirting with 80 mph. The motor and weight shouldn't be much different I'm guessing but I did notice one factor. The Tacoma doesn't require 91 octane but the couple of times that I did use it, my mileage dropped considerably ! I didn't even hit the 300 mile mark before the gas light went on. So in essence I lost 30 miles on a single tank driving in the city. I believe the FJC is required to run on minimum 91 but just for curiosity, try running 87 for one tank and see if anything changes.

The FJ is not required to run premium. A TSB has been out for over a year. It is 'recommended' for optimun HP/TQ and MPG but no longer required. The knock sensors will allow the engine to run on almost any octane by cutting back on the timing/performance.

I was thinking to do that, put 87 octanes in it because I can't afford 3.30 $ per gallons any more especially traveling 1772 miles to moab in 2 weeks, bud I never put anything lower the 91 on it, I don't want to have any problem on the fuel system. Does anybody run on 87 octanes and the truck runs OK?

That is a good question DEWFPO bud, how I know if it is running on 4 gear?. I thing 75 mph at 2500 rpm is running on 5 gear

Look at the instrument panel, it tells you what gear range you have selected. If your in 4th, then just move the shift lever over to the right (passenger's side). "5" will light up on the dash. 2500 rpm still sounds too high. Either your not in 5th gear and/or your torque convertor is not locking in 5th.

The FJ will run fine on any octane fuel. The knock sensors will retard the ignition timing or richen the fuel mixture to prevent any damage. Ever so slightly reduced HP/TQ and MPG might be the result. Many, many folks have been unning their FJ's on RUL & MUL besides PUL since they've had them with no ill effects. No worries.

Like I said, running 87 octane actually IMPROVED my gas mileage as opposed to running the 91 which decreased my tank range by 30 miles.
Funny now how Toyota put a TSB on the FJ regarding octane minimums, I originally went to the dealer to purchase an FJ Cruiser and went through the whole test drive thing and all. Upon investigation I noticed that the Cruiser ran on Premium gasoline. I looked over at the Tacoma's and noticed that they ran on regular 87. My mind was made up there and I opted for the Tacoma. Never the less, I am still very happy with the Tacoma and it's been an off road ace.

I have been running 89 octane in my new FJ since it was new. Except for one time I used 93 octane and I too got less MPG. I was only in the city but still enede up with less than 17 mpg. My first tank (from the dealer) was 92 octane and I got 18.89 mixed city and hwy. I'm gpiong to try 87 to see what happenes. A guy I met in Louisville, Ky. told me he puts 6 0z. of acetone he buys from Home Depot in evry tank and sees 20-22 combined. But I think he has an auto. Mine is 6 manual.

Any input on the acetone?

mph makes a big difference at a certain point, for my 80series if I went over 65mph, then mpg would start to suffer dramatically.

Also, have you calculated the bigger tire size into your mpg equation? Assuming they are larger than stock, you are actually going farther than the odometer is showing.

.....ding ding ding.....
We have the correct answer....Bigger tires = MPG calculation is off.
You didn't buy it for the fuel efficeintcy, did you?

Cheers!

Off course no CDN80eh? I put those tires and lift to improve my off road abilities, bud I didn't know the my gas mileage was going to drop dramatically on the highway, in town traveling at 35 to 45 mph it's doing 17 to 18 mpg the problem start when you going over 65 mph, like cruserloco said from Florida to Utah at 65 mph is going to take me for ever

I'm pretty sure everybody knows that bigger tires will drop your mileage and the difference in size won't throw your calculations that much off. I thought at one time that the mileage was much better then it was because of bigger tires but after I had the speedometer calibrated to the new tires i found out that my gains were minimal. +1.2 miles per gallon.
What's really going on is when Walter exceeds 65 mph , he's losing mileage because of wind drag. His truck is lifted, he has bigger tires and his motor is having to work harder pushing bigger tires with even more wind resistance. People fail to calculate wind resistance and how much energy is used to push a lifted vehicle. I could be that Walters mileage would go back up to 20 mpg using the same tires and lift if he were to draft a big rig down the highway.

Buy a Scanguage2 and track the mileage precisely.

Examples:

Last week freeway trip to Los Angeles and returned (100 miles), averaged 20.1 MPG - not bad.

Last week mixed highway and off road trip to the Mojave Desert (300 miles), averaged 16.3 MPG - not as good.

I don't usually exceed 70 mph.

Running 87 octane, modified rig, 305 tires, WE Beadlocks, Budbuilt skids, ARB sliders and bull bar.

Newbie here.....but I tried the Acetone in my Land Rover and truly recognized nothing. Would love to hear from someone here with different information.

I am seriously considering dumping the Rover and getting a new FJ. So I am lurking around a little bit right now trying to see if my operating costs will improve any if I switch to the FJ. Any suggestions on options or packages I should get? My Rover has a few mods I installed myself....OME 2" lift/springs and shocks, ARB bumper, SLickrock SLiders, XM and new Stereo, that's about it. I wheel some, not nearly as much as I like out at Barnwell. Have made many of the more difficult 3's and some 4's. Would like to get the FJ and run it stock for a while before going into the OME, may get an ARB early on...

Just got 14.5 mpg - 2 tanks worth over 500 miles... 4 people, cargo area full... pulling a trailer.

I have the 6-speed, OME 883s, 285/70/17/ ATs, roof rack with HighLift jack. The trailer was a U-Haul 5x8 box trailer with a mall table, 4 steel wheels, a few other things... Oh, and a PIANO.

So, yeah - 10 mpg is way way off.

Automotive fuel additive
Some automotive enthusiasts add acetone at around 1 part in 500 to their fuel, following claims of dramatic improvement in fuel economy and engine life.[3] This practice is controversial as the body of systematic testing shows that acetone has no measurable effect or may in fact reduce engine life by adversely affecting fuel system parts.[4][5][6] Debates on this subject and the perrenial claims of a "Big Oil" cover-up intensified when the practice was addressed on the popular American TV show MythBusters in 2006, and shown to have negative effect in the televised fuel economy test.[7].

I know this is very old topic. However I have spent over 2 years building and moding my FJ. today I was drivind 130km/h and avaraged 30L/100km [80mph/8mpg].

I have no modified intake, but a snorkel. My engine is 30k old. I run 34" tyres, roof rack and tent. Weight about 2400kg.

I had a 4runner with same setup and it was 18L/100km at 140-150km/h. Same engines, same tyres.

My car is bought as a near junk, rebuild and engine replaced. Can the ECU have been modded that it influences the MPG!?
