Hello all,

It was night time and I backed into car, as you all know the rear visibility at night is horrid!

Well, my spare tire got pushed at the bottom by the bumper and now the it looks like the tire mount is squashed a little as well as my rear door. The gap between the glass and top of the tire is about an inch bigger (crying)

Where can I get a new tire mount? Can't find anything online...want to try and fix this myself.

I read about ARB coming out with a bumper/carrier combo...maybe that's the way to go!

Thanks everyone.

I never have had a problem. Maybe because there is a back up sensor and a little thing called mirrors. sorry if this seems callas but I have not patients for incompitence, especially when it faults lack of vision when it is really human error.

I was rear ended by someone doing 2 - 3 KMH and I didn't think it did any damage but when I took it into my insurance company they found about $1200 worth of damage... all I could see was a scuff on the bumper... apparently the back door popped in and out, damaging the internal structure and it twisted the spare tire mount... It is extremely fragile back there.

As for the visibility I find it a lot better than my full size PU, but I use the same technique of getting out and looking before backing up and with the backup sensor on the FJC it makes a lot easier.

Pretty much guaranteed you have $1k+ in damage, same with any vehicle with a tailgate mounted spare.

Sorry to hear about the damage. Not sure where your at but you can try Beltway Toyota in VA , thats where all my parts have come from.

That's "Callous", "Patience", and "Incompetence"

I hope you made contact with the other car's owner

I'm just sayin'. Ive been on the receiving end........

Don't you love it when you ask for advice and you get unsolicited lectures? But I'll give drfdog the benefit of the doubt.... maybe his cat got ran over by a rogue FJ Cruiser going on a rampage in reverse. So he's feeling anger, sadness and guilt. Or maybe he’s just bitter that he doesn’t have one of those little things called “spellchecker”.

my thanks

Hello all, thanks for the replies (save one). Firstly: yes I did make contact with the owner, went with her to the body shop today...it was $1100 to fix the damage, I paid for her rental also since the car had to remain for 3 days.

Now I just have to figure out how to fix my situation, I'd really love to install and ARB rear bumper setup.

I will no longer rely on the back up sensor as it did not work in this case :-(

Cheers

Rumor has it that there are several rear bumpers under development w/ tire carriers. I have been waiting myself. 4+ (available thru Man-A-Fre), Expediton One, Iron Pig are all developing some. Run a search here and on the fjcruiserforums web site.

Even when you get the new bumper, I wonder if you can add another two sensors to the back up alarm? Most of the systems I have seen have four(4) sensors and the FJ only has two(2). I wonder if you can just splice in two new sensors or do you need to upgrade the entire system.

Backup Sensors

I have found these to be one of the most worthless items on my FJC. Mostly, I roll down the window and stick my head out, as my mirrors are often foggy, muddy, etc. The sensors basically only tell me when I have already hit someone. Oh well, another dead pedestrian. :)

Bad luck in reverse...

Hello there,

Sorry to hear 'bout the rear tire mount- I too believe the idea of asking for advice is not an invitation for a bash-session (especially when lousy spelling and grammar are involved).

None-the-less, I trust any aftermarket rear bumper (steel) will give you the solid feeling of "something's up" that the squishy stock bumper caps don't provide. Also, the All-Pro Off Road rear bumper is aesthetically very attractive- and comes with a couple well-placed holes pre-punched if you wish to retain sensors. The hitch mount allows another margin of protection-all at a price far below the replacement cost of factory parts. Problem at hand...

When it's time to repair or replace the tire mount- while you have the door apart- it's probably a great time to reinforce the support in the event a larger (heavier) spare is swapped in some day. Also, this helps if you use one of the tire-mounted bike racks for the kiddies...

Hope it helps, Sincerely, BD
