I need some help please.

I keep popping axle seals.

Ever since I blew a CV a few years ago I am religiously popping axle seals. I've had it apart so many times now, cleaned it VERY thoroughly and it continues to happen. I've had the breather and the fitting off, both are fine.

Is there something I'm missing? The last time I replaced it I used the Marlin seal and only this weekend getting off the beach surely enough there was oil everywhere. I know I'm seating the seals properly, I even used a retaining compound this time to no avail.

Any ideas??

Thanks, Joel

Yes you need to order the high deflection oil seal from Marlin Crawler. Yoy probably need new spindle bushings as well.

Check the condition of the spindle bushing, knuckle bearings and birfield itself.....if that is all well??... next check the alignment of the knuckle in relation with the housing.........

Hmm there's something I never thought of. Is there where the shim adjustment comes into play?

yes. The shims used on the top and bottom of the knuckle are used to center the knuckle on the axle. There is an SST for measuring this. There is also an old artilce from TT I think about how to build your own SST. Do a search...

Sorry that's the seal I used last time I rebuilt. I thought it would solve my problems. But, it wasn't so. It seems I need the shims to be reset. Which, I am the only person to have touched it I must have stuffed up the shims along the line somewhere.

Bugger.

Dang. Sorry man, but at least you've got a target right?

I'm working on getting my hub shimmed up with the SST.

In the meantime. As I've had the knuckle apart pretty reguarly, I've managed to strectch the rubber hose that connects to the back plate over the spindle a few times but it's dodgy.
I'm due to replace these rubber brake lines on both sides so i was thinking I may as well fit extended one so I can slide the backing plate over with ease. Is this the go, or should I just detach the rubber line from the solid line at the holder on the axle?

Thanks, Joel
