My axle has been making the notorious clicking sound when turning left. I have been taking it extremely easy while turning left, staying off of the gas as much as possible.
(I have new OEM axles, just haven't had the time to get them installed.)
Today I noticed that the clicking sound has stopped. The vehicle still seemingly drives the same with no new vibrations or noises.
I have read about bad axles making noise that sometimes goes away, but it was in a different make/model vehicle.
Is it possible to break an axle and not know it?
EDIT: I just crawled up under it and both axles still feel solid and in place.

All boots are intact, one has a hole in it and is slinging grease. Unsure of axle age, one was replaced shortly before I purchased the vehicle, other I have no idea.
I guess my main question is if it's possible for the noise associated with a failing axle to come and go before it breaks completely?

It's not likely failing, it's just the CV joint falling into and out of the dimples the wear has created. Of course, that's the dealership definition of failing, so you be the judge.

I've seen these and the 80 Birfields, click for thousands of miles and not fail to keep on keeping on. Which one was replaced, and why?

I'm not positive which one was replaced, I only know that it was only one and not both, and that an aftermarket axle was installed.
So I would def know if the axle had failed/broken?
