Recently did a grand circle trip and it was a bit of a pig going uphill at elevation; yet to do the calculations but it was guzzling gas. :crybaby:

I found it was best at elevation to leave power button on, and more importantly, to regulate the overdrive when going up/down grades!

Looking at upgrading to a 4,000lb trailer; will definitely need a WDH, Air Bags, and a supercharger if at elevation. :hillbilly:

I just towed 8500lbs this last weekend. I got 8.7MPG over the 100mile tow route, I was happy with that. I will not be towing 8500lbs again though lol.

Forgot to mention, I tow at 65mph (max speed for trailer tires)

I get 15.5mpg highway not towing at 77mph/2600rpm max. :flipoff2:

Mileage is what I've averaged towing the similar weight up and over the grapevine and up into Kernville. Used to use a load leveling hitch and went to airbags. Like the airbags much better. Already run an OME Heavy suspension. As soon as I knew our scout troop trailer exceeded 1500lbs I had brakes installed on the trailer and brake controller in the cruiser so there's plenty of braking power...from the trailer. She's never been quick going up th grades, but I've always gotten there!

I average between 8 and 9.5 towing my mini. Got a little over 10 before adding the supercharger.

Ouch :bang:

10mpg at what speed without SC; 9mpg at what with SC?

Might have to rethink the SC & the premium fuel or look into a Turbo :crybaby:

60-65 both with and without. SC makes it easier, tho. My mileage is on par with what most folks I know get with V8 pickups towing similar loads.

Have the same question as lordbater except mine is a '94 1fz-fe? I'm really considering a turbo or a supercharger to help pull our camper over the rockies. Sometimes I feel like we're actually going backwards and it's only a 10' camper!!!

i would be scared about my temp gauge flying to the red zone if i towed anything. i have the modified gauge and it already moves when going up steep grades.

I tow my flats boat every other weekend and it does not change my mileage much at all. I get between 12 and 14 no matter what I do. That's all while driving it like I stole it in a 40th Ann. The boats about 2500 lbs fully loaded with fuel and lots o beer.

Question: would a SC improve towing or not???

The 80 does great towing but really struggles on the hills. Even with a cracked radiator, hissing like a SOB, my temp gauge never moved & CO's hills breach 9-10k. I really don't think that there is anything to fear when towing with an 80 except getting rear ended due to the snail pace. Hazards gotta be nice and bright!

I recently had the pleasure of towing our offshore boat across town.. It wasn't so bad. I think it will be better with air bags. and by across town I mean not on the freeway... :)

It would run up over 45 without a problem. I think any faster and braking would have been an issue, no trailer brakes. I'm not sure how heavy the boat is.. somewhere in the 5k range without fuel (it's never completely without fuel) and probably around 400lbs tongue weight, so pretty heavy for an 80..
Titled as 23' (water line) measures about 27'.

My 80 is my emergency boat tow truck. if the main tow truck brakes down en route, the lady will come rescue me in the 80 and we will creep home..

knock on wood. when/if my 3fe ever takes a dump, I think I'm gonna go with an old school 350 swap and be done with it.. I like the simplicity of the 3fe and I think I could stay within the same spirit with the 350 and add some HP..

just saw this, my 93 with a heavy trailer does about 10mpg at 60mph, remember the overseas spec 80's were rated to tow 7000lbs, the us was 5000lbs (got to love legal liability), i have had 7k behind the 93 with the heavy kit and 255/85/16 e rated tires and it did fine wouldn't want to do it that far or fast or down a long grade but it will do it no problem just a little slow,

but my other tow rig has a 400hp cummins and 15" brakes and 19.5 tires, so its relative.

ohh those ultra light travel trailers are great ours weighs less loaded than my 10k tilt deck trailer does empty.. and the cruiser tows it no problem,

We love our ultra light. It's is the perfect size for us right now with the queen bed and double bunks in the back. By the time I can buy a Tundra my daughters will probably be big enough for us to upgrade to something bigger.

We pull a 19' Jayco with our 94 on 35" tires. Get around 6MPG. 220K on rig ARB F/R with SLEE sliders.... weighs a s*** ton.....Currently Its getting re geared to 5.29.

I have a load leveler, anti-sway setup. When pulling flat land you hardly notice the trailer....pulls very nice. Trailer break controller kicks ass.... Steep grades suck, you cant be in a hurry....

New gears will help considerably.... a good discussion here https://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/602352-towing-35s-gearing-question-again.html on gears...
