I am about to put a 5speed in my troopie and I'm thinking maybe automatic instead, what is needed to do this? The 5speed is sitting under the cruiser and I am waiting for a friend to help me guide it in with the hoist. Does anybody no what I would need and cost. This rig will be used on the road for long trips and short. Any help would be appreciated.

2F motor? easiest would be a 62 or early 80 series auto and transfer, no adaptors needed. bolt right on, you would need some driveshaft mods, and a crossmember fabbed up.

You got to be kidding thats it. Wow I might have to really ponder this,

Thank you so much

There's no computer or such for those transmissions?

I want to say electronic started with the '95+ autos (A343F?). For sure until '92 they were valve body controlled.

Honestly though, you are sacrificing durability, economy and simplicity for ease of shifting, and a taller overdrive. If you want more overdrive, get a set of OD tcase gears from Marks. The A440 and I assume A442 are incredible transmissions. They apply power evenly and predictably. I've been able to do some trails with the FJ62 in 2wd solely because of the A440. I know even in my BJ42(3B gives you kind of an extra gear) I wouldn't have been able to do them. But you are losing so much by sticking one behind a 2F.

I would not consider this a bolt-on. This is at least a 4 banana operation. Flywheel? Bellhousing?

For one, you would need to have the valve body redone to match the engine characteristics. Your shift points will otherwise be crap. The only outfit I know of that does this is Rodney's- Wholesale Auto Transmission in Australia. It is not cheap.

Do the 5 speed.

Do the 5 speed.

Please do so. ! I'll be on my way to you to install it. And Please do the SOA.

A440F is my plan for my FJ45LPB. That is non-electronic transmission. Years in the US are 88-90 FJ62 and 91/92 FJ80. 93 started the FZJ80 with the 1ZF engine. Pretty sure that had electronic shift transmission. The FJ80 has the full time 4WD transfer. If you get a A440F make sure you get the adapter plate that mates the transmission to the engine. Get the flex plate and spacer two. Seems I remember the stud on the end of the crank shaft changed sometime in 1990, that could be a small problem.

OD Tcase gears?

Tell me more about this...will they work in a 3spd case? What would be rev reduction in 4w hi? Cost? My '55 with a SBC won't see heavy trail use.

couple of other things I thought of driving home, make sure the flexplate and torque convertor stay together, as I thought there was a change mid-stream on the 62 series and one doesn't work with the other???

also what to do about the kick down cable???

Maybe that's what I was thinking of. I'm hoping all mine matches up. Bought the transmsiion transfer case back in the mid eighties. I was told at the time it came out of a FJ80 but I didn;t believe it since it a part time 4WD transfer. I pretty sure it's a late 62 transmission. The serial number is higher than my 7/89 FJ62s transmission. The flex plate spacer and adapter came from a 91 FJ80 so I hoping the torque converter and flex plate match up.

I swapped a 90 motor in my 88 62 series and used the original flex plate, I've got the 90 flex plate and torque convertor on a shelf. that was 2 years ago and I don't remember checking for differences.

School me if I'm wrong, but I thought the 1988-newer auto trannys still had to be supported by the engine (i.e. tps switch and tach signal)??? If I'm right, a 2F engine will not support a 3F tranny. If I'm wrong, be gentle with the flaming!!!

Well no worries the 5speed is in,now I need to shorten the rear shaft and lenghthen the front.
