I have a 2004 LC and the headlights don't turn off in the "auto" mode when the ignition is turned off and the car is locked. The only way to get the headlights turned off is if I turn it off manually before the ignition is turned off and the car is locked. It has happened few weeks ago then went away until yesterday; I didn't realize the lights remained on and it drained the battery.

Has anyone experienced this problem or can diagnose what the problem may be?

TIA

I have to hit the Lock button on the key fob twice to get the headlights to turn off.

i leave my headlights on the "on" position. Then when you turn it off and open the door, the lights go off automatically. I have my DRL's disconnected so i usually run my headlights unless i want to go into stealth mode

Yes, I am aware of that...the headlights won't turn off in "auto" mode no matter how many times I hit the lock button on the key fob. Any ideas?

ok dumb question - although not really "dumb".

as i have the LC100 GXL, can you tell me what the headlights auto mode feature is?
thanks
peter

when it gets to a certain darkness the lights automatically turn on. When it gets light enough out they turn off. you can adjust the setpoint by turning the sensor on the top of the dash by the windshield. Me? They're usually just set to ON friday-sunday as I end up going out mostly at night. I dont like auto headlights.

Auto mode rules!

Like Mr. Ronco says, "Just set it and forget it."

Old thread but where is that sensor located and where is the button to turn it on?

I have a euro 04 LC100 with auto windshield whipers and I would love the auto headlights. I presume it was an option?? Or when you don't have it is it easy to get, perhaps it is already prewired and the sensor is already there but just needs activation?

No auto switch on the stalk? Strange.

For us, the sensor is on top of the dash, passenger side, near the windshield.

The stalk switch works too. Foggy daytime needs headlights just like night. I just wish the automakers would link up the windshield wipers to the headlights. In many states now it is the law to have your lights on when raining and using wipers. I don't personally have a problem turning them on, but I wish those folks with white and light gray vehicles would turn on their lights in murky weather!

The sensor is about the size of a matchbox below the dash, above the glove box. There is a button sized lens on the top that can be adjusted with a piece of tape on a screwdriver. Why do I know? Mine were always on too and the dealer quoted me $800 to fix, so needless to say I started exploring and found that somehow the box had broken from the lens and fallen behind the dash. Very hard to reach but I glued it back together with some superglue, snapped it back in place and have had no problems since. You will need to pull the glove box to get to it, and the air ducts are an obstacle too.

I have a sensor on the left side of the dash.. like a blackish sensor eye or something like that..On the passenger side there is a hole too but its covered up with a matching cap. Where do you guys turn it on? Is that also on the wiper stick/lever.

Hmm now if only i knew what the box would look like exactly... I have a feeling the option is on my truck but just not hooked up.

It's on the stalk. Like I said earlier, I leave mine "on" all the time.

When you (1)turn the truck off and (2)open the door (has to be in that order or the lights stay on) the lights shutoff. I don't like the auto setting because they don't turn on when it's raining. I lost the cap that goes over the sensor so even the slightest change of light triggers them.

Toyota claims the sensor on the left is for the HVAC system - it is supposed to sense when the windshield needs defrost, but I don't think mine ever did that on it's own . The one on the right would be the headlights. If it is there, it is a dark, translucent cap as well. No other visible features.

I recommend pulling the glove box and looking from underneath and see if there is any wire heading there. The box is roughly 4cm square by 1cm tall.

Ok thnx that clears thingsup...no wires no box. And for the HVAC system it never worked for me either but to be hounest I didn't even know what it was for but then again my window never defrosted out of its own.
