I've done a search and didn't find anything specific on this. Probably been covered and excuse the question/thought if it has.

I have an 88fj62 with the original auto in place. It's got about 240K on the original 3fi and tranny. For the last several months the atf (?) light has come on when under load on the freeway. The last time it came on I drove it a couple of hundred miles. Shoulda stopped I know. It is now apparently leaking fluid from the tranny. Can't seem to keep it full. I'm now afraid to take it on the next expedition wherever/whenever that might be. Knda ruins the buzz when I'm on the road to worry about it.

So, I've already done the 62->60 front end swap. I'm thinking about the 5 speed manual transmission. Is there a right up on that somewhere? Guess I have 60 envy but won't part with the 62. Seems like the 5 speed would be about the same cost as an auto rebuild/replace? I'm not a mechanic but I've got a great one in Portland that has done this sway before.

Interested in any comments you guys might have pro and con.

Thanks.

ps. Eventually will put a deisel in if the 3fi ever wears out...in my lifetime.

There have been a few write ups on this, but it was combined with other work so may be hard to search for. I have looked into this too as my tranny is starting to slip. From what i have found, we would need a 60 pedal bucket to get cluth pedal. slave cylinder, lines for the clutch, the tranny and drive shafts for the correct tranny you are wanting to put in. If you go with a H55f then you would need drive shafts from a truck that had the 4 speed and spacer in it, or have some made that length. There is a good thread that Orangefj45 did but it was an auto to H55f/crawler box swap, but alot of the changes will be the same.

I don't know which mechanic in Portland but if it's not W at Over the Hill you might consider talking to him or James. They've done this swap before and their rates are *very* reasonable.

Thanks for your response to this. I'll let you know when the conversion is complete. I'm sure the folks at Over the Hill are great but my mechanic is Willamette Blvd Auto. Very happy with the father son team of Larry and Josh Harper.
