Ok, My manual box is a little sticky through the gears, but a bloke told me the other day that i should put about a cup of auto transmission fluid in the box and that it would make the it easier to slide through the gears, and do no harm whatsoever. Any one ever heard of doing this and what are your thoughts?

I heard about this years ago it was supposed to be a fix that they used in the late 70's model Torana for a notchy box. Only the gear oil was replace by ATF and it was supposed to find it's way in to the bearings and syncros. Not sure how long it was left in. Often thought about trying it in the 80 for a notchy 3rd gear but never had the nerve to risk trying it

If you're running dino, I'd try changing to synthetic before putting ATF in. Just did this in my 82 4x4 Hilux yesterday; I'll give you a report after today's test drive! :)

auto is fine...

I've always used auto fluid in my manual gearboxes (BMW's)... BMW actually does this... little does anyone actually know this... it's better for the trans... a little thicker & handles heat better... btw... I always use amsoil...

the us manufactures use ATF in the gearbox's to get around CAFE regulations. The trannys don't seem to like it when the fluid gets old. I have a 96 Camry manual that was a little notchy, as posted I swapped out thr gear lube for synthetic and it's smoothed right out. I'd do that first.

Similar to Landtank's experience. Noticeably improved, especially when cold. NOT a fix for a dying tranny, but feels more like it "should". FWIW, I used Mobil 1 75-90, in a tranny that specifies either 80-90 or 75-90.

thanks heaps guys, i will give the synthetic a go and see if that loosens them up a bit, and then if they are still abit tight i might try the atf as well.
