Jumping boards here but my buddy asked me to post up. He just picked up a 90 v-6 4x4 runner auto with a bad tranny. He has another tranny but was thinking about inchworm's crawler box or one similar while the trans is out. Is anyone running a auto crawler? Got any words of wisdom for him? Thanks

You may want to consider getting a torque converter with a higher than stock stall speed because its hard to stop an auto in double low unless you shift into neutral.

I've got a TH350 auto in my Toy p/u and manual in my Runner and wheel both. I prefer the auto.

Yeah do it

Ive researched and talked to inchworm, gearslug, and even another guy. I went with the IW due to price and availability. Mine are half installed I havent used them yet but I bought them from a buddy of mine (Carl, the owner of Outback offroad) He ran them in his 90 runner and he loved them. I love autos so this was my best option.

You could also intall a 340f and bolt a typical marlin crawler set to it, but that is much more involved due to making the 340f communicate with the 340h ECU.

I expect to have a final drive ratio of about 400-450:1 (counting the TC as a doubler) which is really low for an auto. I suspect it will be fun:D

I also have a TH350 with a 205. I like having it there when I need to hit it and not have to worry about a clutch. But its just a personal preference.

Yup. It works great. There is a couple steps in the process that make it difficult for a garage mechanic. It's not the ECU communicating that's the issue, it's getting the correct signal from the VSS. It requires putting the A340H reluctor ring on the A340F output shaft (easy, slips right on but needs a small amount of surfacing to sit flush) and then mounting the A340H VSS pickup on the tailhousing to get the signal (requires a pretty precise hole).

Here's the detailed write-up.

sorry to hijack but I have a newb kind of question...

Is the t-case the same between the auto and manual Toyota pickups?

manual + 4cyl = gear drive

manual + 6cyl = chain drive

auto + 4cyl = 1 piece trans/chain drive tcase A340H :frown:

auto + 6cyl = same as 4cyl with auto

This is pickup info (pre 95.5)

There is one combination missing...

auto + 4cyl (pickup only) = A340F with chain drive t-case, same as auto+v6

I found standard cab pickups (2nd gen I believe) with an auto came with the A340F and chain drive t-case. I never saw it with any other model. I confirmed this at the dealer when I purchased a brand new shifter console cover from the above mentioned model. You can see the console piece in the article.

hijack mode on:

I do not want to post a thread, but I have an 85 RET AT. The TC is leaking and I do NOT want to tear it down.

I have a 93 4runner V6 with THE SAME tranns code. any and all info on weather or not I can just simply swap them (I imagine sensor and BH swapping at the least) would be appreciated. :frown:

links, yes or no will do thanks!

Park them side by side and answer your question:flipoff2:

Buy the automatic transmission FSM....

There are some minor case differences and the 93 will have a cooler attached to the t-case, but it should be doable. Don't know about VSS & ECU compatability, probably different given different motors.
