Can somebody tell me the exact speaker sizes for my 1990 FJ62? Also give some ideas or examples of customizing that has been done on your own rigs, including amp and subwoofer placements, etc. Thanks!

Stock speakers for my 87 Fj60 are 5", but I don't have those anymore.

I put a rockford phosgate 5 1/4" component system in the front doors. they fit well, with only a thin piece of plexiglass spacing them. The component tweeters are in the upper section of the door, while the woofer is mounted in the stock position.

I also have a pair of Alpine 6x9's in the tailgate.

As for amp and subwoofer location. My RF 12" sub is in a bandpass box that I bought from Best Buy. The Punch amp is mounted under the drivers seat. I ran the wires under the carpet, so that none show anywhere.

I'll second the 2 piece component speakers in the front doors. When the tweeter isn't stuck in the middle of the woofer, the woofer can be thinner and still sound good. I've got some low line Panasonic 2 piece units (60$ on sale) in the front doors with the OE grills still in the door panels. The tweeter are surface mounts up near the top of the door. Add a pair of substantial 6x9s in the back with a power amp and you'll be in good shape. If you still need to add a big sub - there is room in the rear side panels. The stock side panels revert back to sawdust as they age. Its easy to replace them with some vinyl covered marine plywood for a sturdy speaker mount. Good luck.

the front door can hold a 6-1/2" as long as it's shallow enough. I have Alpine 6-1/2" in the front but they are less than 2-1/2" deep so the windows still roll down.

thanks deep south - exactly how deep south are you? mobile, al here. did you have to modify the door panel any or does it still look stock?

I have JBL seperates in my front doors, with no problems. I also have a Punch 10" in a box in the back and as soon as I get into the new house I am going to redo the box so that it fits over the wheel well to free up some space. As far as 6x9s go, someone asked me once if I ever wondered why you never see 6x9s in competition vehicles? If I were going to put speakers in the rear I would go with some 6 1/2" rounds. ;)

the alpines I use are just over 2" deep - Kenwood Excelon also has a shallow mount 6-1/2".

Mine mount behind the factory grilles with no modifications.

I'm using Infinity Kappas, 5.25" front, 6.5" rear. Running off a 55Wx4 Alpine head. The Kappas are like MB Quarts in that they are power hungry, so going with a sub and a couple amps in the near future.

Sound is pretty awesome as it is without the amps. The rear fenders create a nice space for getting base out of the 6.5s

The 6x9s will fit if you are willing to make a panel to mount them in. The 6" speaker that comes in a 62 is mounted to a metal bracket that in turn is mounted to the body. The 6x9 speaker will not fit the smaller bracket. The 6x9 speaker is a killer mild system speaker when properly set up. The biggest problem with them is when the oval cone is over extnded, the speaker will try to fold, causing sound distortion and physical distortion of the voice coil. In the right enclosure, they really sound good. I had a set in my 84 60 on fiberboard panels cut and put in place of the factory panels. I had a simple 50x2 amp running them.

i just put the sub in a box and threw it in the back, you might want to use some brackets to hold it down.

I have 6.5 2ways Polks in the front and back. The fronts have a 1/2" spacer to help out clearance.

I'm running 2 10" Audiobahns in the back- when I get back in town I intend to pull up the carpet and put in some sound mat because some frequencies really like to resonate back there.

Salty Dog -- what are you doing for amplification? I've also got 6.5 Polk components in the front and have a Kappa 12" sub in the back all driven by a single amp. Thinking about adding another set of speakers in the rear (was thinking about some co-axe sp? speakers back there but haven't really decided) and another amp.

Alright, not to hijack the thread or anything but....

I've considered putting nice speakers in the back but I do a lot of hauling and filling the truck up with camping and boating crap and I'm worried that the speakers (or the faceplates) will be damaged....am I being over protective or what? I've wondered putting them in the ceiling to get them up but I'd have to make up brackets and stuff :\

Taker easy

I'm right there with ya.. I wanted to use the factory grills with the bars as some minimal protection, but it wouldn't work. Priority was sound first, practicality second. At some point I'll do something about it, but the wheel well and strategically placed hi-lift has protected grills well enough for now.

i considered putting in up in the ceiling but got concerned with safetly..those speakers are heavy and they'd really need to stay put in the event of a very sudden stop.

Right now I'm just running deck power (20 x 4) but I have a 40 x 2 JVC amp waiting for me when I get back in town for the fronts. Components are really the way to go up front because the speaker location is so low that it screws up the imaging and the rears actually sound louder than the front. I think 2 ways would be fine for the back because they help "fill out the sound." I'm not really an expert or anything but I know the location and power for the front is more important. For the subs it's an old MEI amp leftover from my highschool daze running 125 x 2 into 2 Ohm. When it retires ( and it will because Audiobahns are very power hungry), some stereo folks I trust say JL Audio or JBL are good decisions. Rockford also gets consideration but they are notorious for running very hot. If you plan on staying with one sub, then a class D mono amp might save you a few dollars on a per watt basis but you lose a bit a flexibility if you decide to change your setup around some day. I dunno if your current amp has 4 channels but you could try to run the backs off deck power and see how that works before buying another small amp for the back.
