Installed a real AT temp gauge just a few hundy KMs ago. Real eye opener. It takes longer to get up to temp than I'd imagined plus it runs warmer than I'd thought and we've been enjoying mild ambient temperatures here in the ol' PNW.

It's a '93 HZJ77 with the late electronic A440F. Have an intercooler and the huge-headed Warn 8274 winch blocking all that crucial ram air space. No real usable room between the IC and A/C condenser. The ATM OEM radiator is long gone so no trans cooler option there. The PO has an undersized cooler behind the valance. Hoped to just run a longer cooler there in the 4" x 23" x 3/4" size. Tru Cool used to have one in the perfect size. Part number LPD4920 is ideal! Add the thermal bypass and done, son! Yeah.... Yeah...No! It's not available anywhere I can find. Even stooped to seeing if Alibaba had a knock-off today.

Have the rigs front end apart for other work currently. Good time to deal with this too.

Has anyone found a trans cooler that fits in that lower valance (stone tray) area? It won't get great airflow but bigger is better than what I have now.

Looking into remote coolers with fans as well. Potentially a mounting spot along the inside frame rail on the LHS. The ATM hard trans lines are already long AF. I'd either have to double back with soft cooler lines and add maybe another 5-6' of line in each direction.

Is that kind of line length pushing the limit on what the transmission can pump? See 80 series peoples have run cooler with fans back to the spare tire cubby hole.

OR abandon the hard lines and route soft lines from both unions over the top of the transmission to the LHS. Shorter run for sure, but not sure if I can get the hard lines moved enough out of the way? Plus find an adapter that goes from whatever that union thread is to whatever the remote trans cooler wants. Ugh.

Anyone been here? Other options?

Know sleepydad did that awesome front OEM bumper mod. I'm all ARB'd up there tho.

Not helpful to your situation, but 5 speed 🤣

Sorry, couldn't resist, but everything under your hood looks 🔥🔥🔥

You would happen to be able to get rough measurements of that PDI intercooler could you? I’m still trying to build up courage to do and a2a on the front of mine

Daaaaam. Those IC pictures are BIG! Sorry @FJBen...I did that from my cellular telephone.

Called Derale. They claim that they've never heard of any issues running longer transmission lines to their coolers. People run them to the rear of their vehicle all the time. Told him I'd be adding 5-6' (in & out) and they were like no-problem-dude! and said to stick with the stock size hose.

Asked him about cold weather and warming that trans up a tad quicker. He recommended a thermal bypass over the inline thermostat they sell in the kit. Think I'd also want a switch to manually override the fan.

Have my eye on their 25 stacked plate 46K BTU/hour mamma. Mocked up a 13" x 10" x 6"ish cooler/fan out of cardboard. Glad I did... it's way bigger looking than the dimensions.

Still debating but seems like my only route at this point.

Anything other that I'm missing besides a manual trans?

Talking to myself in this thread. But I did some work on this project over the weekend and thought I'd update.

Plan is to keep the HOT OEM hardline to front of rig. Add in a thermal bypass, Then route to a new admittedly undersized ram air unit under the valance. Then run back to a secondary remote cooler with fan. May put it on a switch vs a thermostat or always on (TBD). Then it's another short run back into the trans cool side.

Decided on a Derale unit that looked like it would fit mounted to my fresh water tank box. Really the only place I could find.

Wanted it spaced away from the box as much as possible. Added some anti-vibration thingys. Simple mount. Holes, nutserts, Loctite. Done

The trans union is M20 x 1.5 but it would need a male inverted thread and had a hard time finding anything that would work. I can cut the steel line and do a compression fitting. Getting to it looks like a PITA. Only need to do one now that I'm keeping the OEM hotside hardline.

I found these M20 to male -6AN and a proper sized washer. May try this first. It moves the sealing surface to the top face. Not certain I'll get a good seal.

And that is the thermal bypass doo-dad >

So it's mounted now. Ran the wire into the cab and stopped there. Need to order more hose and fittings.

are you not concerned about rocks/mud flying into the fan/cooler located there ?
Oh. I'm totally in the concerned camp. Have had all the levels of concern during this entire project.

Really limited choices on placement though. IC/condenser/radiator and engine bay areas are all crammed packed. Under the air cleaner was a pipe dream... plus it's pretty warm on that side. Tried inside the LHS rocker area between my slider mounts and the body. Same issues there and it was directly behind the front tire. Would also sit lower than we'd like. Here I felt like it was at least blocked from the front tires line of fire.

Maybe I can add a sort of skid off the box so at least the bottom is protected more? Screen over the fan intake? Unplug the trans temp gauge? Definitely putting it on a switch so I can kick off the fan in snow/water/mud. I try to steer clear of mud and it's no rock crawler. Honestly, it's been in the garage/driveway more than any trail in the last two years anyway. Ha.
