I have a 75 FJ40 2F. It used to be smogged, but underwent a desmog by the previous owner. All of the items were left in place for appearance sake I believe.

The EGR cooler has a corrosion hole in it.

Other items seem to be OK with the exception of the EGR pipe which has been cut, crimped, and welded.

I looked at the air injection rail and it appears OK.

I am assuming the other parts are OK (yes, it might make an ass out of me later).

I am in TX but not in an area that does the tailpipe sniffer, etc. It passed inspection prior to me tearing it down for a rebuild.

Would there be any value to re-smogging this as I rebuild the engine?

Easiest would be de-smog.

I am not really concerned about HP decreases with smog as I am not racing the thing.

Give me some opinions. I am waffling 50/50.

Desmog. By reinstalling it, you are putting money into a system that is not very effective to begin with. That's what I ran into when rebuilding mine.

Depends on your goals. If you are trying to restore to original showroom condition then re-smog it. If you have doubts whether or not the PO did a good job de-smogging and are trying to correct that, then either re-smog or sort out the de-smog properly. If you're just trying to be environmentally conscious, well you shouldn't be driving a gas-sucking truck with 30+ year old emissions controls! :flipoff2:

Mine runs a lot better after de-smogging, runs cooler too.

Not going for showroom condition. More of a restification. I would definitely go through the de-smog properly if I were to do it because you are correct in that I have no idea if the PO did it properly.

Really leaning to the de-smog with the input so far unless someone can give a compelling reason to re-smog other than living in Cali(if that is needed there?) or trying for 100% original condition.

1/4" NPT hex plugs are definitely a lot cheaper than the other parts I would have to order to resmog which would let me put money in other directions.

Hi All:

I would agree with the "de-smog" approach, though I believe in California the rig has to be a 1973 or older to be smog-exempt (CA. residents please correct me if I am wrong.)

If you decide to go the "de-smog" route get with someone knowledgeable like Jim C. of TLC Performance. He can re-build your Aisin 2F carb and re-curve the distributor to work correctly on a de-smoged engine.

Good luck!

Alan
