I've just finished installing an astro van conversion PSP into a 71 fj40, 4 inch lift, V8 5.7, 35' tires. I still have the Chassi in my garage with all the body off. How should I attach the original steering damper? I think I'll probably weld something onto the pitman arm unless you all have a better Idea.

I'm happy to be pointed towards another thread if this question has already been answered.

Also, I've installed rear disk brakes and am in the process of installing front disk brakes on the original axle. I'm Putting on GM disks and calipers. Question: I'm using the drum brake bracket/ mounting plate as the bracket for the calipers(modified, cut out and reinforced). I wasn't about to spend money on the JT outfitters bracket. Also this modification seems nice in that it partially encloses and protects the caliper and disk (unlike the JT outfitters conversion. Have you ever heard of this being done? Any ideas.

Thanks,

-Trevor (in Charleston, SC).

Welcome.

Yep, and then removed because the axles keep failing.

V8 5.7, 35” tires.

If you operate your truck anyplace other than a shopping mall, you had better get used to changing out those garbage drum brake axles.

There really are reasons why people spend the money on the used Toyota disc brake axle and knuckle components, chiefly among them, the fact that you get rid of the 10 spline garbage, and make your axle and brake components compatible with aftermarket axle upgrade options.

Hey, thanks. I was afraid that might be your answer. I'll start looking for another axle. What about the Damper? Should I weld it to the pitman arm or somethere else? Thanks again.

If your front end is in good shape: IE good tie rod ends, good spring bushings, tight shackles, a steering damper is not necessary with power steering.

I also have the Astro PS in my V8 cruiser and I don't need the dampener. Popular opinion seems to be that it is that it's just a band-aid to cover other issues. If you really want one, the universal dampeners that utilize small u-bolts to anchor to the rods can be used.

I JUST WENT TO THE JUNK YARD TO JUMP ON THIS ASTRO VAN PS GEAR BOX MOD. $35 BUCKS FOR THE GEAR BOX, HOSES AND TWO U JOINTS WITH EXTENDING ROD.
