Went with an Albright style (superwinch 90-14452) setup to replace the Warn trash cans on my Ramsey REP 8000. This is an older winch and I recycled a WARN M8 3 pin controller box.

Ive done research and mocked up the setup – it works. However, I had a question around the “A” post and “winch motor ground screw” setup referenced in many posts. I do not have an “A” post on this winch and not sure I have a “winch motor ground screw”.

Here is how most have said the setup should look:

Good video explanation:

PDF of the manual to my winch (older Ramsey REP 8000): http://ramseywinch.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/REP-6000-8000-9000.pdf

After doing a lot of reading… here is how I am planning to set it all up (hacked up the image above specific to my layout). I know the setup works but was hoping the collective minds could lend some 12volt experience around the “A” post and if all my grounding is “sound”.

FYI… saw this post, but all the pics disappeared:
Superwinch 90-14452 solenoid vs Warn 34971 contactor?

Also.. first time Ive posted an image in a while... this old rig popped up :frown:

I'm running a Ramsey Pro 9000 winch that's about 20 years old, and not only do i have a 1-0 ground cable running from the battery Neg post. to the engine block. But i also run a 1-0 ground cable from the battery Neg. to one of the base** mounting bolt holes on the winch. Here's a photo of my winch with the 1-0 ground cable bolted to the bottom of the winch plate, along with the F1, F2 and motor Arm. 1-0 cables. **Note** In my Ramsey owners manual it says to run a ground cable from the Neg. post on the battery to one of the winch's mounting bolts. You can see that Neg. battery cable attached to the bottom of my winch mounting plate in photo #2. In photo #3 you can see the motor Arm. mounting stud.

How many connection points on the motor, is a permanent magnet type?
Per the owners manual in his link, his winch should be a series wound motor.

Dtrain, did you change the motor on your Ramsey Rep 8000 winch? The reason i ask, in the owners manual that you linked to, the Rep 8000 shows that there are hook ups for F1, F2 and "A" on the motor. Another question, how come you didn't replace your bad solenoids with Ramsey replacement parts?

Thanks for the replies guys. Will get to my laptop and do the quote/reply (tough from my phone)

forgot to add a view of the post area which doesnt look like the manual but it says it's for my winch (mockup wire only btw). However, I did use that manual to replace the cam ring which is not motor related and it was spot on.

Winch motor is original.

2 connection points... posted a new pic above

I do not know how to tell for sure... the manual I found on Ramsey's site says its for my winch but its says that my winch has an "A" post but it actually does not.

Sounds like I should run a neg cable from the battery -> to a winch mount bolt. Still dont know about the no "A" post on the winch though.

Motor is original to my knowledge. I dont think that is the right manual but the innards were the same. There is no provision for an "A" post on the winch but does have an "A" and a "B" on the cover (image above).

I went with an albright setup to eliminate "trash cans" style solenoid - Ive only had problems with them.

Just went through this, the one we did was permanent magnet type motor, but didn't look like yours. Apparently Ramsey switched back and forth, somewhat randomly? The permanent magnet type only has two connections, reversing polarity reverses the motor.

Got a contactor locally, it only had a diagram for series type and nothing showing how it worked or how to use it with a permanent type. Could have likely figured it out, but wound up getting one of these:
TEMCo CN0238 - 1 Qty 450 Amps DC Winch Motor Reversing Solenoid Relay Switch 12 Volt Contactor

Or
https://www.amazon.com/Reversing-So...rd_wg=jl3C1&psc=1&refRID=TGGQSVE3CEAKB8S05ACX

This shows how it works and has a diagram for permanent magnet type motor, works great. Not sure if it would be the same for other contactors?

Dtrain, i don't know if this is the case or not, but when i looked for the manual on my winch due to it's age. I had to search through a bunch of different manuals on Ramsey's web site that had winch's with the same name as mine, but were in fact different. Anyway i went to Ramsay's web site, and did some digging and i think i found the "correct" manual for your Rep 8000E winch, it in fact has a motor with only a 2 cable hook up. Here's a link to that manual, i hope it helps.

After spending some more time on Ramsey's web site looking at owners manuals for Rep 8000 winch, it seems Ramsey made this model winch with both types of motor.

Two connections is a permanent magnet type motor. It's easy to test, hook jumper cables to B- and one of the connections, hook the other to B+ and touch the other connection, it should run. if it does, reverse polarity, it should go the other way.

@Tools R Us and @Rifleman... thanks a ton! Great info!

Rifleman - that PDF is the unit (Ramsey Support got back to me with an almost identical manual... all the electrical setup was the same)

Based on all this info... here is how I am planning to wiring things:
