Are later US R151 transmissions a direct replacement in 1986 LJ70 2LT?

Greetings forum, I was browsing another thread and saw a reference to a 2020 and later part number for available in the US R151 transmissions 33030-6A414. Going price was $1900. Would this be a drop in replacement for the R151 in my 1986 LJ70 2LT, which pops out of first gear?

Not quite, the transfer adapter is different (longer) and uses a different type of transmission mount. Your crossmember would have to be modified, rear driveshaft shortened and front driveshaft lengthened. The bell housing it comes with is for a 1HZ, and the input shaft is too long for the 2L-T bell housing. You'd have to swap in your current input shaft and bell housing. There may be other relevant differences, too, but those are the ones that spring to mind.

Thanks for the detailed reply. Cruiserparts.net reached out with a good rebuilt solution and I think I will go that route once I get my EGT situation resolved.

No, no you won't.

Call Marlin Crawler and ask their opinions. Cruiserparts is good for take off and new surplus parts. Don't go there for rebuilt or used (rotten) stuff. also, their box and packaging has much to be desired.
