I have a 67 FJ40. It looks like my spider gears are messed up. Instead of fixing it, I was thinking of using a later axle that came with the FJ. It's almost complete birfs, diff,. I know that I would need 30 spline locking hubs. But besides that is everything else the same like the snouts? Thanks

The pinion flange might be different, depending on the year. The link below is a real good guide. You can swap your old pinion flange onto the newer axle if the spline is the same. If the spline is the 27 fine spline on your new axle. Then you will need an adapter, cruiseroutfitters also sells them

Link to very good chart of the different bolt patters

link to adapters to go from one type of pinion flange to different style drive shaft bolt patter, under $40 for them

good info. thanks! is this diff stock?

That is a Torsen. Been looking for couple of those ever since I seen them. Most claim there are junk. But unless your planning on running large tires and rock crawling it will probably be fine. If plan on making a rock crawler there is good chance of destroying it.

FYI don't try and take it apart, chances are you'll never get it back together again.

Was Bocsh/Zexel owner when these were installed in FJ40s> I was thinking Gleason. I doubt Bocsh/Zexel made them for coarse spline axle and I know they were made for them.:meh:

To me it looked like the spider gears were worn, but now that I played around with it it looks it looks like they are like that. ill keep it. now ill have to rebuild all the seals. not a problem but im trying to figue out why my 4X4 doesent work. The quest continues!

Looks like the ring gear is what is messed up. If your Torsen is set up for 30 spline axle I do not know of anyway to convert it to coarse spline axle. May be easier to change the whole axle. Eastiest way would be just change the diff. I have coarse spline axle as well as coarse spline lockrights. But a Lockright is better suited to a rear axle axle. If you only have one locker it is better to have it in the rear than the front. Locked in 4WD and a open rear end your putting extra strain on th front.

Is the Torsen your diff and stock in your 67? 10 spline? Those are not spider gears but worm gears. Do not try taking it apart. If your going to replace the seal may as well go thru and check the bearings and make sure the preload on the oinion is correct.

The ring gear seams to be good. I think that I jumped the gun. Either the axles where not in all the way in or I should double check the tranfercase again.

I'm looking for a couple of fine spline Torsens. Already have a set of coarse Torsens myself. Your rear axle doesn't have one does it?

Are those spider gears bad?

Those are not spider gears but worm gears with a straight gears on the end. Was the diff noisey before you removed it? Any metal flakes in the oil. oes the drain plug have a magnetic? Any metal shavings?

If you have a Torsen in the back it will have special hubs to do away with the C clips the rear axle used.

I could not get the 4x4 to work . So I don't know if it made any noise. I jacked up the front and tried to get the pinion to move by rotating the tires. Could not get it to move or the other tire to move in the opposite direction. I did not see any metal in the oil but it was thick. Should those strait gears be grooved like that ?

Did you have the the hubs locked on both wheels? With both hubs locked or drive plates either the other wheel should spin in the opposite direction or the pinion should spin. Did the wheel you were working with just spin or would it not move at all? Unlike regular auto lockers that the wheel would spin in th same direction with the tires off the ground the other wheel will spin in the opposite direction with a Torsen. If both hubs were locked and if the wheel was locked or would spin with nothing else happening is not good. You want to make sure everything is working before you put it all back together. At this point I would put the ring gear in a vise using rags or maybe a couple pieces of wood to make sure you don't mar the ring gear. Then put a axle into one of the spline and using a strap wrench or the like spin the diff and see what happens on the other side of the diff. The spline inside should be spinning in the opposite direction.

Yes the straight gear on the end of the worm is notched that is normal
