Are 60 series axles any stronger than the later 40 series ones ?

They seem to be pretty much the same apart from width, is this the case ?

other than being wider they are the same most of the parts inter change.but they are usually 373 gears in the 60 and 411 in the 62 hope this helps .try search function there is a lot more info in there good luck

Yeah cheers, I have done a lot of searching but no one seems to touch in the strength issue, all seems to come down to width, at around 2" it hardly seems worth the effort

all 60/62 series should have fine spline pinions... Thems is stronger than the course splines.

And twist off just the same as a course spline pinion when the drive shaft u-joint binds up at the differential end....

Hi All:

Warning, thread hijack! :D

Steve, in your opinion what would cause drive shaft u-joint binding?

An excessively worn joint? Extreme angle of operation? A drive shaft that is too long for compression travel??

Thanks!

Alan

pinion angle in relation to driveshaft angle is what causes bind. usually under spwing wrap/axle wrap

Mark...

they are exactly the same...save for the pinion spline on later models and also the bolt patter on the drive flange differs in pre '74 trucks it is a smaller pattern. to the best of my knowlege the side gears, short side axle shaft, spider gears ect are all the same...

Differential companion flange bolt pattern changed again 08/84 and later....

:meh:

They are the same except for older models being coarse spline (a bit weaker than fine spline) The biggest killers on pinion shafts is axle wrap.
