After you're done with all this, upgrade to OME Heavy suspension in the front. You will need something that can handle that load.

I'm sorry, but you got a winch for compensation of what?

like to know in case someone owes me a winch or maybe a lift or a ammo trailer...or hell just some license plate frames..

The story behind the winch is long and something I'd like to put behind me. As compensation it did not cover my loss but it was the only thing he had to offer.

I did get a free M101A trailer a few years back just for removing it from someone's property. Right place at the right time on that one.

Okay, I thought maybe I had missed a deal on winches. I understand now. thought the winch manufactorer was giving them a way...

didn't mean to seem too curious, just didn't want to miss out on some Major Swag!

My free winch was scored from a guy who was clueless on FJ80's. He ended up toasting his front spindle and had no idea what to do. He was in the process of selling it, so he thought what the heck, I will trade work for the winch. He would have been in at least a thousand to get it fixed at a Toyota dealer/shop. The parts cost around 100-200 and he paid for them. I got it back together this weekend and scored a free XD9000 winch with remote. I first I felt like I took advantage of him, but did drive about 2 hours each way to get to him and after thinking about what Toyota/repair shop would charge him, I felt OK. He would have had to tow it to a shop as well.

My SafariGard Bull Bar arrived yesterday. Plan to install this evening. I will take some pics of the back side before it goes on and post here. 1st impressions are good. The quality of construction looks great. Welds are good. Powder coating looks clean and even. 3 mounting tabs for lights. Each have two pre drilled mounting holes. It shipped via FedEx freight. Arrived right to my door at work.

My main concern at this time is the design of the winch cradle. I would probably use heavier plate steel in that area. Also a designed jacking point on each end would be nice.

I did not order the recovery rings with it at this time. Pretty spendy from SafariGard ($125.00 each I think). Less expensive ones are available from other sources. However if the specs that SafariGard gave me on them are accurate, the ones they offer are much stronger. Which brings me to an additional observation. I believe that the bumper would fail (ring pull out) before the ring would fail. I think in that situation I'd rather a weaker ring be used and have that fail in the event a force so great be applied to the system.

Anyway look for pictures late tonight or tomorrow morning.

Cant wait for some pics, im tossing around a lot of ideas for bumpers and i have never seen a safari guard. How much do you think the materials in such a bumper would cost? Im just trying to figure out how much of the cost of these aftermarket bumpers is labor/powdercoat and how much it would cost to build one from scratch.

I would think $100-$150 in steel + powder coat. Most of cost in labor. If I had the resources (tools, garage space, time) I'm sure I'd build one myself. Our next home will have a larger garage. I watched the time that went into the custom bumper on the back of my 40. Paying $500-$1000 even more for a bumper is not out of line IMHO.

Well, installed my winch last night in the bumper. You really have to take out a lot of the lower valence (about the size of a liscence plate). Another issue I ran into is that the end of the winch ran into a section of the bumper. Ended up trimming some of the bumper off. Wasn't very happy. Might be different with other winches (mine is an XD9000 - Corbet, your pic of the XD9000i looks like it will have the same issue) Anyway, I really like the way it turned out. I like the compactness of the Safarigard and how the winch is tucked in there nicely. On a side note, it would be impossible to steal the winch as it is so tight in there. To install the winch I had to take the bumper off. My rig has 2-Hella 4000's mounted on the bumper. If someone can post pics, I can send them. Overall...very happy with it. Just need some new synthetic line and I am good to go.

OK, the pictures I promised before mounting.

I did not have the winch clearance issues that Fourrunner described. This is an older model Warn XD9000i. I will have to do extensive triming to clear the solenoid pack. Into the grill a few inches. Both pics were taken with only one bumper mounting bolt in each side. That way the bumper was "hinged" on the frame. I set the winch in to see the fit. The 2nd Pic I held the bumper as close to upright as possible. I did not complete the winch install this evening. When I complete the install I'll add more pictures.

Looks good Corbet...I will post or have you post some pics of mine when I get a chance to take some pics. My winch seemed to have a long motor housing...an older XD9000 (not "i").
