ARB vs TJM bumper on a 200

If you check out Chocolate's youtube vid above, they talk about it.

Nothing like it on the TJM.

Here is the crumple zone for the arb. Hard to see in pics but is there. Not sure if tjm has anything like this?

Could you attach the link again... Please

I believe that the ARB on my LX450 was also compliant and I remember it mounted directly into the frame rails, did not see much of a crumple zone on that one at all. I wonder, does anyone on the forum have experience smashing one and what damage occurred???? Many many years ago on the LX450, things get fuzzy...

very impressive

Looks absolutely killer! Your paint looks like glass.

I remember you did quite a bit to make sure the bumper-filler part color matched the rest of the cruiser. Read that others found having a paint shop just paint those didn't always work out. Any words of wisdom for those of us without painting skills or knowledge of what to ask for?
Go to a ppg automotive paint shop. They'll match your color and can place the product into a spray paint can for you. My shop told me to use this adhesion promotion prior to the paint.

Thanx. That's exactly what I needed.

The 200 series front airbags are triggered by a deceleration sensor, not an impact sensor. The airbags are not triggered be crumple zones or anything like that. Its all about the G-forces.

Its just like the RSCA for the side curtain airbags. If you are offroading and break over a certain rollover angle, the airbags will deploy even if the truck doesnt actually impact the ground on the side. Thats why you turn them off when offroading. No one asks if swapping the factory steps for sliders will be airbag compliant on a side impact to they? Again, not impact dependent.

Just like the issue with Gen5 camaro's side airbags going off in hard corners. They didnt hit anything, just tripped the sensors threshold.

you are so money with your answers - glad you still lurk on here

The milliseconds of crumpling the ARB mount crumple zone allows for a slower deceleration than if a rigid mount was used (where deceleration would be nearly instantaneous). Makes perfect sense.

TJM is apparently also designed to be less rigid as well, but it is not immediately apparent how in examining their design.

I have been trying to find a YouTube video showing and instillation of the TJM with no such luck yet finding a 200 instilation, I do like how the TJM appears to have a cradle that mounts to the frame, the winch mounts in the cradle. The bumper then appears to mount to the cradle.... Could someone get us a few pictures???

Does the winch mount to the bumper on the ARB like it did on my LX450? If that is the case I wonder how the winch pulling in various angles would affect the crumple zone on the ARB, these areas are meant to fail/compress at a given force.

Right, but deceleration is directly related to the crumple zone or lack thereof. Federal laws mandate that airbags deploy at certain X to 0 speeds. A more rigid bumper actually lowers that X.

Spot on, Kurt. It is the lower X that has me concerned. Airbags are expensive (not to mention dangerous in their own right).

I was looking on YouTube and ARB has a video that shows the robotic welding machine actually welding the crumple zone components together and that the part in particular was one of the most sensitive parts requiring the most accuracy in terms of the welding. It was a very good video, I see the airbag point. One reason I am getting one of these bumpers is for my wife also, she is good at finding garage doors and parked cars at Publix.

Good Article, the decision is becoming clearer. Just need to save some more cruiser cash... There is a constant balancing act I have to play, kids soccer, dancing, swimming, karate, school expense's, and all the easy things that are plan able in life. These are house, car, vacation, utility expenses, for some reason my wife is always putting my cruiser at the bottom... I need to let her use the cruiser next week then she will hit something and I will not get a guilt trip from her when I spend 2k on a bumper. Naaaaa I thing I will just buy it...

Start collecting deer strike photos.
She'll suddenly want a full bull bar.

Need sliders? Side impacts. Sorta joking, but not really. Both are legitimate safety boosters.
