First, anyone want to sell their ARB roof rack to me?

Second, can one tilt UP the sunroof with the ARB rack on?

Check your PM!

I just bought an African Outback full rack with the goodies. Looked at the ARB, but it was way too heavy for my liking and it sat up too high from the roof. The adjustability of the AO rack is key for my useage! Very Nice Rack and worth every penny!

Interesting. I just bought a 80 Series and one of my first things I wanna add is a roof rack.

I was actually thinking about building my own, because the actual amount of materials in those things compared to the prices I've seen is an outrageous markup. I also didn't think I would want to get a rack that covered the sunroof.

Do you like the African Outback rack? Do you just toally remove the Factory rack to put this on? Mine has the full-blown factory rack on the top.

Any recommendations for an Land Cruiser Newbie?

I have a Thule rack and no basket. It works for what I need it to and that is canoe/kayaks. As far as the factory....roof adornment...(I will refrain from calling it a rack)...the mounting points are poorly designed and a hot bed for rust. There are several ideas in the FAQ about what most of us do with the factory roof "rack".

I have an INTI rack and the sun roof tilts and opens. No problems there. Another nice thing about roof racks like the African Outback and the INTI rack is that they reflect a lot of the sunlight that hits the roof of your rig, thus making your car cooler in the summer.

Thanks for the info all...I'll try not to "spam" the board with topics you all have probably all talked to death. I'll use the Search. But I am a total "n00b" with my Land Cruiser, so I think this board will be a big resource for me.

I knew the factory "racks" werent great...but I had no idea they were that big of a deal.

I talked to someone at my local Toyota dealer who was discouraging me from putting a rack on the rain gutters because he said they bend up the rain gutters. But they couldnt really give me any straight answer on the strength of the factory rack.

Gutters are a much stronger/better attachment point than the factory rack.

That is what i assumed...but that is what they told me. I was told that the rain gutters would all get all bent up from mounting a rack to it.

Not surprising though...considering the source.

You are learning very fast for a noob! :D

I have been using mine for over a year and mine aren't bent at all...now if you took one side off and didn't loosen the other side and pried up on the rack...I could see them bending.

So did said dealer actually recommend using the factory roof rack over one mounted to the gutter rails?

Yes it can tilt just fine with an ARB rack sitting there.

I will admit that the rack is VERY, VERY stout. I have jumped around on it, and loaded it up really full with tires, gear, coolers, power tools ect...

Not exactly.

I asked just told them I was thinking of adding a roof rack, and asked about mounting it on the existing factory rack compared to attaching it to the rain gutters. And the person I talked to just advised against the rain gutters...saying they see rigs in there all the time with bent up rain gutters from racks. But...he didnt really have an answer for me when I asked about weight ratings on the factory rack. The cross pieces are only rated to 100lbs, but the dealer had no weight rating for mounting something on the existing side rails of the Factory "rack".

From what I've read on here so far...it seems like most people remove the factory rack, and install an after-market rack on the rain gutters. That is probably what I will do at some point I think.

It appears that you can tilt and open the sunroof with the racks on, but isnt it loud as hell when you are rolling down the road? When I have just my thule cross bars up there it's really howlin' away, adding a fairing helps.

I'm going to call BS on the dealer "..saying they see rigs in there all the time with bent up rain gutters from racks". First of all, I dont think there are very many people out there that get dealer serviced that haul anything up there heavy enough to bend them. I have personally haul 600+ pounds of lumber up there with load bars without even cracking the little plastic caps on the gutters:flipoff2: let alone do any damage to the gutter itself. I also had someone ATTEMPT to pry a rack system off the top of my FJ60 and they ended up bending the feet of the rack and not the gutter that was used for leverage. In any case, dont sweat the the strength on the gutters.

MC, if I read this right it looks like you have the African Outback loadbars. If so, can you snap a shot for us; I've been curious about those but I dont think that they can mount far enough back to be of benefit to me when I want to throw the boat up there. I think I need the full rack, mounted as far back as possible, and then I will fab up a rear roller so that I can angle the front of the boat on that roller and push it up onto the rack. Do you think the loadbars would work for that? Thanks.

Turbo - I WISH I had the Outback bars, assuming these are the ones you are talking about?

The bar in the picture is on top of a 100, but I think I have seen the gutter mount ones and you could mount those as far back as needed. What kind of boat are you hauling? There are definetly some slick roller systems out there.

I was talking refering to a Thule system I have and also to a homemade system I had using Quick N' Easy mounts.

Yes, those are the ones I was gonna get but AFAIK they can only go back as far as the gutters run straight. That would put them too far foward to rest the front of our boat without really resting on and riding over the tailgate which I would not want. Because of this with the bars vs. the distance that the full rack extends back beyond that point where the gutters taper to a stop, gosh darnnit, looks like I'm gonna have to get the full rack! :D If you know of good roller systems please post some links; I was going to weld up something where the roller support bracket bolts into nuts running along the AO roof rack channels - basically with one roller on the farthest rear runner and a long rope to the front going to an assistant you could easily rest the front of the boat on the rack and roll it up all the way to the front of the rack. That's the plan anyway! :D
