Hi, 1991 arb bumper. What’s everyone using as a winch? Looking now. Thanks, Mike

Lighter, stronger & easier to work with.
If it breaks it drops to the ground instead of trying to cut you in half or go through the windshield and there’s no wire strands to stab you.

Yeah, synthetic is superior in every way except lifetime, and durability when abrasion is involved. If you were doing winch pulls every day, steel would be better IMO. Most people use a winch very sparingly though, it's only to get you out of a bind when you've messed up... or in my experience, get someone else (usually in a Jeep) out of a bind when they've messed up. If your usage is rare, the cost of occasionally replacing the rope (when it gets too old, peemeated with mud/sand, or worn) is easy enough to eat. Again too, the safety aspect. If you're doing it every day, you know how to do it safely. When I've had to winch people though, in my experience, most people don't have a clue how dangerous an activity it is. They'll try and stand around in the death zone with their phones out recording. I'm in the cabin of my car behind armour trying to operate the remote, having to herd people away so they don't get cut in half.

I asked the same question until I was involved in a recovery and watched a steel cable snap and cut through 2 saplings at knee height.
Ordered synthetic winch line as soon as I got home.

BTW, these guys are sponsors for the Crazy Cruiser Motorsports team Crazy Cruiser Motorsports | Locust Grove VA - https://www.facebook.com/Crazycruisersmotorsports/ (shout out to the guys) and make VERY high quality recovery gear.

Yes I always moved people away from the cable and put a blanket over it.

I have a Badlands 12K (older version) w/ steel cable. I keep the cable greased so it doesn't rust. Yes, it's messy to use. I keep a special pair of gloves in the truck to deal with it.
I use it once per year, and usually on a tree to cut down or remove.
The solenoids are cheap and have a 45 second duty cycle. It's annoying, but I'm too cheap to pay for the Warn for as little as I need it.
I am the most well-equipped on my cul-de-sac and at the local mall.
I have used my winch and truck to pull a 54K LB track-mobile back onto the tracks. I had to have another truck anchor to the back of mine because the brakes and traction wouldn't hold.
