Front ARB air locker installation for a 1978 FJ40.
I was fortunate to have a high school buddy from long ago to help with the installation.
In his former life he was a machinist. It is quite a difference having a machinist working on these precision parts versus a mechanic. Rear lockers were done last March. I am the original owner of this FJ40. It is used rather aggressively for snow plowing around Grand Lake, Colorado. I always wanted lockers and am getting too old to dig out the vehicle when it gets pulled into even small ditches with snow up to the door handles. With a little finesse, I can lock the rears and get the whole car to spin around a bit. With the front lockers, it should now drive right out when it is in trouble. After doing this mid-August install, we tested the car out in my big back yard going up "Gravel Mountain". I'll put together a video of that in a few weeks. Part of the "road" is a one mile long rock crawl. It took more than two full days to do each locker. A bit more time was used repairing broken locking hub bolts and getting the car up and off the ground. Had to order new ring gear bolts for the front .... $100 for 8 plus shipping.
Deja vu for many here. The tip of an iceberg for others.

is the air tube supposed to go around the ring gear like that?

I don't remember doing mine like that..

It's been 4 years and 2 kids since I last looked at one.. Just don't remember doing it that way..

I'm sure if i had a diff in front of me I'd see why.

Maybe it's the different newer design now and many years since I have mine done, but I don't remember mine looked like that.

Both of ours are like that too (both new design). The flat spot on the case to drill and tap is on the opposite side of the ring from the air ring, IIRC.

Very nice snowpusher! I'm going to have to track you down and take a look at the snowplow mounting setup you've got there.

Does it the airline has to cross over the ring gear? Can it exit on the same side?

Yes, the copper air line is routed correclty in these pictures.

Yes, ARB has changed the whole design of the air locker assembly to reduce components and increase strength.

$100 for a set of Ring Bolts .... TWELVE

Ring Gear Bolt kit for Toyota Landcruiser - MK TLC-RGBOLT

Not quite as nice heads as the originals yet probably best available.

I upgraded my plow last winter to a SNO-WAY setup with hydraulic down-pressure.

The carriage mount was done beautifully. I will show photos soon.
It is very well worth copying along with the way I did the plow lights
so that I can use them year-round to see better the elk and along the roadside.

The snow-way carrier (which had to be modified) is mounted pretty high and staying
on full time so that it can be an early warning for me if I am about to high center
and hit those precious differentials.

Nice thread. I did my front and rear two years ago with 4.56 r&p. IMHO the best upgrade to do if you need a selectable locker.

Video of my FJ40 being tested (and more ) is now on YouTube.
No fancy rock crawling ... yet it passed the test of whether
we got everything put back together correctly.
