I just finished putting a coat of POR15 on engine compartment side of the firewall. I'm considering applying a coat of Herculiner or Durabak to the firewall and inner fenders as a finish as opposed to painting it. Anyone ever done this?

I can't think of any reason you would do this. In my opinion paint would do just fine for your engine compartment. It doesn't see any abuse like your pickup bed, skid plates, or bumpers. Because the stuff is not smooth like paint (BTW I've only seen Herculiner) I think it would be tough to keep clean, you know oil and grease residues.

I know I have seen some bedliner that had a slick/shiny finish. Is that Durabak?. I also know that plenty of people have their intire tub lined inside and out for corosion resistance and sound supression...
I personaly would also be worried about cleanup/ and longevity of the product though...(heat and chemical exposure) I have used herculiner before and God help anyone who spills anything nasty on it. You can hose it down, but too rough to wipe or scrub easily.
I think you should try it...so that my FJ55 doesn't have to be the guinea pig.

The PO of my 1970 FJ40 painted the whole rig, inside and out with durabak. He used the the tintable stuff. Its a little rough but its not a show truck anyway. It washes up okay but still has a dull finish to it. Personally, I like it.

I used the Herculiner in mine, and really wish I hadn't. It holds up pretty good except for brake fluid or battery acid, they eat it away in no time. I just think a nice paint job the same as the exterior of the rig gives it a much cleaner and nicer look.

I did the interior of my BJ40 in grey Herculiner...it's a glass body, and was gelcoat... very slippery with any dirt or water etc. now I don't need floor mats, which flew out at highway speed, nothing slides around in the back, it looks great with the grey door panels...I've got stainless drain holes I open when hosing it out, or to let the snow/ice melt drain...

As mentioned under the hood I don't know, too many chemicals, oils etc could damage it...

Herculiner in the front interior

I just laid it down in the front of my cab. We'll see how it goes. Easy to put down. I was told that if it asks for 24hours to dry go for 2x or 3x the amount, otherwise anything you put on it, even if it feels like it's dry will become glued together. I have not yet decided whether or not to put it in the back of the tub (too pretty) and the reason I did it, was for the sound deadening and the heat transfer.

Herculiner in the front interior

As you can tell, I am not a good painter. But it will be covered. so for utilitarian purposes it should do the job.

What about the Wheel Wells? Seems like a great place for it. I just had some new metal welded into mine, and the Body guy sprayed Black undercoating over it. My plan is to Wire brush off all the old undercoat and brush in Grey Herculiner.

I did the interior and exterior of my 80 series. Very happy with the results. I am planning on a few more coats. The engine is loud--like a 2F....;p
